Burnett has broken orbital bone, needs surgery

Embattled starting pitcher A.J. Burnett is off to an unfortunate and quite dubious beginning in his Pirates career. Wednesday in Bradenton, Fla., Burnett was working on bunting and accidentally fouled a ball off of his right eye. He flew back to Pittsburgh to have it examined and the news is not good. The Pirates have announced that Burnett needs surgery Friday in Pittsburgh to repair an orbital fracture.

And there's a YouTube of the errant bunt attempt. Here it is:

It's no laughing matter, but when the injury first occurred, Burnett reportedly said, jokingly, "where did the bone go?" (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)

There's no word yet on recovery time for the 35-year-old right-hander, but I asked injury guru Will Carroll on Twitter and he said it would be a "couple weeks. Just have to get it stable." So, assuming everything goes well, Burnett should be alright for the start of the regular season.

Fortunately for the Pirates, they have starting pitching depth. Even without Burnett, the Pirates have five starters, in Erik Bedard, Jeff Karstens, James McDonald, Charlie Morton and Kevin Correia. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Morton is recovering from hip surgery and may not be ready for the beginning of the season. If both Burnett and Morton are down -- which is the worst-case scenario -- it looks like Brad Lincoln would get the nod.

Burnett was run out of New York after posting a 5.15 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and an AL-leading 25 wild pitches last season for the Yankees. Still, he has plenty of talent, with the ability to post a high strikeout rate (8.2 per nine innings throughout his career). He was also a valuable member of the 2009 World Series champion Yankees rotation. The move to the NL Central should benefit Burnett as well, whenever he's ready to take the mound.

Burnett has broken orbital bone, needs surgery

You get your medical information from someone on Twitter?
He's a very respected injury analyst and has been for a decade. If you don't want to believe him, that's fine. It's your choice.

Hey Matt, I was just browsing through my reviews and noticed that you responded to my message.  Yeah, you're right it is my choice and I didn't believe him.  looks like you got caught with your pants pulled down though.  Like I said, twitter is for lazy people who don't want to research information but rather only want to be the first to report instead of waiting and writing FACTUAL information as they happen.  Your source said he'd be out a few weeks and should be ready by the start of the season.  Oh well...

I don't wish this on anyone. Very uncomfortable injury to deal with and the depending on the surgery today the nerves could affect feeling in his cheek and eye socket. Cashman and Girardi always said AJ worked hard to try to improve himself. I never criticized him because he was trying to get better and you could tell he had the talent he just allowed the distractions to alter his pitching. I hope in this new environment when he comes back he pitches well.

Okay now, I admit that I had time to ponder your response, and I truly appreciate the fact that you did answer my question, but now, may I make some minor, nay, major adjustments to my initial question? Take baseball, a sport where one cannot be repeatedly substituted. In addition, baseball is, on the most part, unless you were playing in the days of Ty Cobb, a contact sport. How is it that the pitchers were given the luxury of focusing on their position and not having to bat?? While diff erent eras make comparisons quite difficult and usually unfair, I think this is one of the exceptions. What happened to the days of when a pitcher could carry his own as a batter?

Pitching is art. I do not take that for granted, but so is playing the "hot corner" at third base. How much time would the average third baseman spend on practicing his trade as glover? Perhaps I should rephrase the question. How much time SHOULD a third baseman spend. The same holds true for shortstops, catchers and even firstbasemen. YES YES, I am aware that a fairly significant amount of time is spent learning the defense of a pitcher. So, what the hell, pay them accordingly. Don't take the bat out of their hands.

This almost made my day.  The biggest jerk in baseball has this happen.  If the Pirates are lucky maybe this knocked the "idiot bone" out of his head!  If the Pirates are smart they will drop him to AAA ball, and keep him away from the rest of the team.  I have no idea why they wanted him in the first place!  He is a complete, and undisputed, A-hole!
