New Phillies closer -- and former Red Sox closer -- Jonathan Papelbon has never been afraid to speak his mind. Thursday morning, he did so on a CBS radio affiliate in Philadelphia -- and it likely won't endear him any further to the Boston fans he left via free agency.

“The difference between Boston and Philadelphia, the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “The Philly fans tend to know the game a little better, being in the National League, you know, the way the game is played."

To be fair, it's tough to tell if an athlete is pandering to a new fan base when something like this is said, and he did say he enjoyed the Boston fans.

"I’ve had a guy take of his prosthetic leg and throw it in the bullpen in Boston,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “It’s a religion. It’s a way of life. They come to the field and they expect certain things out of players. It’s an environment where you put up or shut up. I enjoyed that. It got my motor running every day.”

So he wasn't attacking Boston or the Red Sox fans. Still, he did say Phillies fans are more knowledgeable and I can't imagine that sits well with Boston fans.

What say you, fans, was he right? Go ahead and vote, hash it out in the comments, whatever you wish ...

Pap will do or say anything to generate some kind of stir in the media for himself. Those who watched him close for all those years know that, and take this whole thing with a grain of salt.

I now live in Upstate NY but my heart is still in Philadelphia where I was raised. It's funny; every new season I enjoy spring and the new seasons. I am also a devoted Yankees fan also. So each yr. I look forward to a Phillies-Yankees World Series

how in the world can anyone root for 2 teams in the same sport...it boggles the mind!!!

To the comment below.....you should know that South Philly should be wiped offf the face of the planet. Nothin but scumbags there.  Also, hows about North Philly?  If you can honestly say thats a nice and safe place full of friendly people, you are a liar.  I live in Connecticut and have been to both places and I would HIGHLY be in Boston rather than Philly in  heartbeat.

Papelbon has never pitched for Philly in Philly and the prosthetic leg is a refrence to the song Shipping up to Boston which was Papelbon's entrance song in Boston.  The leader of the Dropkick Murphys took the song away yesterday.   I'm shipping up to Boston to find my wooden leg.
So Philly fans gain some knowledge

Would it have been his entrance song if it did not happen. Philly Phans have knowledge of the game. Not of all the hype used by other teams. Nor do we care for that type of knowledge.

25 pages later Matt Snyder has proven his point. The other networks are picking it up because it sells.

Considering that most Red Sox fans started watching baseball in October of 2004, I would agree that the Phillies fans are more knowledgable.

Be careful what you wish for.  He will be booed by these fans if the aging Phils and there bloated payroll miss the playoffs.  I guess thats why he blew the save aginst Baltimore is his last game.

North east fans are the worst, not very bright and thugs(punks).
