Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

New Phillies closer -- and former Red Sox closer -- Jonathan Papelbon has never been afraid to speak his mind. Thursday morning, he did so on a CBS radio affiliate in Philadelphia -- and it likely won't endear him any further to the Boston fans he left via free agency.

“The difference between Boston and Philadelphia, the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “The Philly fans tend to know the game a little better, being in the National League, you know, the way the game is played."

To be fair, it's tough to tell if an athlete is pandering to a new fan base when something like this is said, and he did say he enjoyed the Boston fans.

"I’ve had a guy take of his prosthetic leg and throw it in the bullpen in Boston,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “It’s a religion. It’s a way of life. They come to the field and they expect certain things out of players. It’s an environment where you put up or shut up. I enjoyed that. It got my motor running every day.”

So he wasn't attacking Boston or the Red Sox fans. Still, he did say Phillies fans are more knowledgeable and I can't imagine that sits well with Boston fans.

What say you, fans, was he right? Go ahead and vote, hash it out in the comments, whatever you wish ...

Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

Something tells me that there will be an awful lot of Red Sox fans at Citizens Bank Park on May 18, 19 & 20, when the Sox play the Phils.  I think they may want to tell Papelbon exactly what they think of him, and I can't blame them for feeling that way.

The Boston fans are proving their hysteria right here in the Comments section.

So he said something nice about the fans of his new team? Horrors. How dare he, right?  Whoopidee-doo. It's the same for only EVERY frikkin free agent that signs a big contract with a new team. it's no reason to throw a veritable Hissy Fit here on the ol' Intarwebs.

Unbunch Thy Panties, Red Sox fans.

Any player that is leaving a place that fans has cheered him , to turn around and say they they are less than others, is quite frankly hurtful and not very smart.

Papelbon is like many young, wealthy, privileged athletes.  He flaps his jaws before thinking.  Which makes him just like the Boston fans.  Transplanted Bostonians (who can't stand living in that hellhole) show up in Denver at Coors Field, behave as though the ballpark is their personal bachelor pad, swear and shout at those around them, drink to excess, then are escorted from the ballpark by the Coors Field Old Guys Wearing Polo Shirts and Playing Security.  I don't know anything about the relative attributes of Philly fan vs. Red Sox fan... but I'll take a Philly fan any day.  One thing I feel certain about: Bobby Valentine will take the Sox and eff them up.  Thank you!  Go away Red Sox!  Take your clubhouse grease and swill with you!

The poll connected to this "story" is just silly. Of course he is going to say that the Phillies fans know the game better than Boston fans. If he was in  somplace that doesn't have a major league team like for example,Iowa he'd say the same about minor league teams. He's Philadelphia's to live with now. I hope that he shows a little more respect to his new team than he has to his old team. What does it mean to be hysterical about baseball anyway? Most of the time players seem to complain that the fans don't care enough, now this guy seems to be saying that Boston is bad because they care too much. Whatever you may think about this voting in that poll is ridiculous....btw I am from Boston so I am a Boston fan, knowledgable or not.
