New Phillies closer -- and former Red Sox closer -- Jonathan Papelbon has never been afraid to speak his mind. Thursday morning, he did so on a CBS radio affiliate in Philadelphia -- and it likely won't endear him any further to the Boston fans he left via free agency.

“The difference between Boston and Philadelphia, the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “The Philly fans tend to know the game a little better, being in the National League, you know, the way the game is played."

To be fair, it's tough to tell if an athlete is pandering to a new fan base when something like this is said, and he did say he enjoyed the Boston fans.

"I’ve had a guy take of his prosthetic leg and throw it in the bullpen in Boston,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “It’s a religion. It’s a way of life. They come to the field and they expect certain things out of players. It’s an environment where you put up or shut up. I enjoyed that. It got my motor running every day.”

So he wasn't attacking Boston or the Red Sox fans. Still, he did say Phillies fans are more knowledgeable and I can't imagine that sits well with Boston fans.

What say you, fans, was he right? Go ahead and vote, hash it out in the comments, whatever you wish ...

It's not hard for philly to sweep anyteam when they sign every top pitcher in the game is it philliesR2C2?
Nowadays, the phillies and Red Sox think their owed championships because of the big cities they represent.

actually I've been all over the U.S., and I've never seen more gangs on the street in any city than philly.
Also never seen more people in a city willing to fight you either.
But a thug city= thug sports teams, just ask michael vick

The Phillies fan base should also know that their team is the only professional sports team to lose over 10,000 games in its history. But, I guess 1980 is when baseball officially started, huh. Talk about idiotic.

When was the last time the Reds won a World Series? Hell, when was the last time the Reds were even in a World Series?

Idiotic = the Cincinnati fan who decided to shoot off at the mouth about losing professional sports teams. A) the Reds are a joke every year (didn't the Phillies sweep the Reds in the playoffs and no-hit them?...ROFL) and B)the Bengals are probably the worst franchise in all of professional sports.

(1) The Santa Claus incident didn't happen at a Phillies game. It happened at an Eagles game. (Duh--December, you know?) (2) It happened over 40 years ago. (3) As I understand it, they weren't responding unfavorably to Santa Claus as such; they were booing a bad actor who was doing a lousy job of playing him--in other words, they were booing someone who was desecrating Santa. So there!

People outside of Philly don't know what was really going on with throwing snowballs at Santa and you have most of the story correct. However, the reason they were throwing snowballs at him was because Santa was drunk as a skunk and falling all over the place at the Vet. The fans started booing the drunk and throwing snowballs at him in the process.

So, you're right....the Eagles fans were mad at him being a bad Santa....but that was because he was drunk out of his mind in the custome.

Thug town? Really? Dude you have no clue. It's nothing like that in Philly. Dont make a comment like that when you have no clue and obviously have never been to Philly.

basically, boston is a wannabe new york and philly is the second biggest thug town in the U.S. besides detroit.
Oh yeah, both cities try to buy championships as well!

Philly fans are snobey and very inmature and talk much crap even if ur weak Padres fan

littleballs81, I just looked up "snobey" in a very large dictionary and couldn't find it. Care to tell us what it means?

I also don't quite follow the "even if ur weak Padres fan" part, either.

Does your logo suggest that you actually graduated from the University of Miami?

To be honest, both sides are pretty terrible . Philly fans are snobey and very inmature and talk much crap even if ur weak Padres fan . They are just sick , i mean, if you have the balls to boo Donavan McNabb after all he did for that trashy city come on, absolutley the worst fans in all of sports has to go to Philadelphia!!! Boston is not much better on the other hand but, they are a distant 2nd and atleast will joke around with you untill they get to drunk. I love when Boston fans come to Arlington and we get are chance to boo everyone of them idiots and they travel well so we have alot of options to talk crap to , and when they are not at their home place they sure are quiet when the heckling comes back at them. So thats my opinion for both sides and dont care what you think about it!!!!!

Papelbum you are a douche. you helped the Red Sox lose more big games than you ever saved. Keith Foulke was a way better closer than you ever will be. In 2007 we won the world series but it would've happened with or without you. Can't wait to see how many games you blow this year. I say at least 7
