Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

New Phillies closer -- and former Red Sox closer -- Jonathan Papelbon has never been afraid to speak his mind. Thursday morning, he did so on a CBS radio affiliate in Philadelphia -- and it likely won't endear him any further to the Boston fans he left via free agency.

“The difference between Boston and Philadelphia, the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “The Philly fans tend to know the game a little better, being in the National League, you know, the way the game is played."

To be fair, it's tough to tell if an athlete is pandering to a new fan base when something like this is said, and he did say he enjoyed the Boston fans.

"I’ve had a guy take of his prosthetic leg and throw it in the bullpen in Boston,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “It’s a religion. It’s a way of life. They come to the field and they expect certain things out of players. It’s an environment where you put up or shut up. I enjoyed that. It got my motor running every day.”

So he wasn't attacking Boston or the Red Sox fans. Still, he did say Phillies fans are more knowledgeable and I can't imagine that sits well with Boston fans.

What say you, fans, was he right? Go ahead and vote, hash it out in the comments, whatever you wish ...

why is anyone paying attention to anything papelbon says? i can't think of a major league player off the top of my head that's more dumb than papelbon..have you ever heard him speak? he's john rocker dumb...does anyone remember the stupid dance he did after the world series win? beckett's referred to him before as "that idiot redneck." the phillies can have him..the poster that said he's blown every save of consequence in the last few years is correct..he'll melt down and phillie fans will be all over him..just watch

If he blows saves to end the Phillies' next 2 seasons (like he did with the Red Sox, blowing a 2 run lead to the Angels in 2010 and last year's meltdown against the Rays), we'll see just how "non-hysterical" Phillies fans will be.

Red Sox fans can be a little crazy, but that doesn't mean that we don't know the game of baseball.  Although the Phillies fans may not be as insane as Red Sox fans.

Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

I've spent most of my life in those two markets.  The Phillies fans certainly have a passion for their team.  But as Jonathan Papelbon alluded to, the Red Sox fans obsess to an unhealthy degree.  This article strikes me as a 'pandering'.  Philly fans need to get used to the idea that Pap will want to have his own Press Conference after every appearance.  He loves the media, and will be a great source of "scandal-rag" quotes.  Will Charlie M be able to use his "team muzzle" effectively?  We'll see.  Pap has a tendency to point out any of his teammates that MIGHT have been the cause of his loss.  Let's see how well he fits in the PHL clubhouse, when we're at the end of August.  I am pretty sure his absence won't be a news item in Boston.

As if you can even determine "which set of fans knows more".  What a stupid piece.  Obviously Papelbon is pandering to the new fan base.

And both fan bases will get riled about it; which must show both fan bases are simple minded.
