Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

New Phillies closer -- and former Red Sox closer -- Jonathan Papelbon has never been afraid to speak his mind. Thursday morning, he did so on a CBS radio affiliate in Philadelphia -- and it likely won't endear him any further to the Boston fans he left via free agency.

“The difference between Boston and Philadelphia, the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “The Philly fans tend to know the game a little better, being in the National League, you know, the way the game is played."

To be fair, it's tough to tell if an athlete is pandering to a new fan base when something like this is said, and he did say he enjoyed the Boston fans.

"I’ve had a guy take of his prosthetic leg and throw it in the bullpen in Boston,” Papelbon said (CBS Local). “It’s a religion. It’s a way of life. They come to the field and they expect certain things out of players. It’s an environment where you put up or shut up. I enjoyed that. It got my motor running every day.”

So he wasn't attacking Boston or the Red Sox fans. Still, he did say Phillies fans are more knowledgeable and I can't imagine that sits well with Boston fans.

What say you, fans, was he right? Go ahead and vote, hash it out in the comments, whatever you wish ...

Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

Santa Claus snowball story is 40 years old, tired, and completely misrepresented. Not important here anyway, what is important is that this is TOTAL pandering on Papelbon's part. There are knowledgable, loyal fans in both parks, and there are complete idiots in both parks. One "fanbase" is no more, or less, baseball saavy than the other. Why bother trying to argue or compare them? it is a pointless and completely subjective.

Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

Boston/New England is more of a Sox area, Philly more of an Eagles town....

Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

Don't know much of Philly fans but from my experience with Boston fans they are the most whinniest group ever.  When things go well, they act so entitled and rub it in your face and when things don't go there way, they complain and make excuses and say "what if."  But it seems like they're passionate about their teams which is more than I can for some cities!!!

So he correctly states that baseball is a religion to Sox fans, but then he says fans in another city know more about the game than fans who live and see it as their religion.  Sounds like a contradiction to me.

I don't think Philly fans could be more knowledgeable than Boston fans. Boston fans have never been smart enough to assault Santa Claus with snowballs.

Today it is uncommon for a player to stay with one team. So when a player moves on most have nothing but good to say about that teams fan base. Why open your mouth? Why even comment? Papelbon be smart next time.

Papelbon: Philly fans know more than Boston fans

As a Red Sox fan, I do know one thing - ever since Papelbon popped off about being better than Rivera, he has blown every game of consequence his entered.  Let him blow a couple games like that season-ending loss to the Orioles last year, and he'll have a couple beer bottles bounced off his nugget courtesy of his newly beloved Phillies fans.

Phillies fans are more ridiculously insane and more rude than Sox fans (which is saying something), but more knowledgeable?  NO WAY!!!
