MLB leaves Colt .45s uniform decision to Astros

The Astros may or may not wear the original Colt .45s uniform complete with the smoking gun graphic, but at least the decision will be the team's to make.

Major League Baseball had originally told the Astros they couldn't wear the classic uniform with the gun on it as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration. When the team debut in 1962, the Colt .45s featured a smoking pistol, with the smoke making up the "C" in "Colt."

Now the team will make its decision known on Friday whether it will wear the awesome uniform or cop-out and wear a plain, boring, inaccurate uniform (can you tell which side I'm on?). In a statement released Thursday, the team said:

"Over the past few months, the club has been in discussion with Major League Baseball about whether to wear the authentic Colt .45s jersey. The original logo features the Colts name and a pistol. The alternative jersey would only have the Colts name on the front of the jersey. This week, MLB informed the Astros that the decision would be left to the ballclub.

"The Astros organization continues to value fan input, therefore the Astros have been reaching out to fans the past week to get their opinion on this issue.

"Our fans have expressed overwhelming passion and support for the Astros and our rich 50-year tradition. We plan to announce our decision tomorrow, Friday, March 9."

The team is scheduled to wear the uniform as part of its "Flashback Fridays" promotion this season, wearing the Colt .45s uni on April 10 against the Braves and April 20 against the Dodgers.

The Houston franchise wore the uniform from 1962-64.

MLB leaves Colt .45s uniform decision to Astros

A perfect example of how the loudest morons get to affect the world.  This should even be an issue.

Yet another sign of the apocalypse.  Since when is a depiction of a smoking gun an issue?  Unreal.

What a joke!  Why do we have to over hype everything in this country?  Who cares if the original uniform had a smoking gun on it. This country has lost all of it's balls.  We are so afraid of doing something that will offend someone in some way shape of form.  Just like the college football teams that had Native American Names associated with them and are changing them.  If we went to another country to live, there's no way in hell they would conform to our beleifs and opinions.  Next they will want to change the name of the World Series to the North American Series !

Love the uni... never saw it before and I never would have if the Astros weren't celebrating their history with the throwback. I knew that they were originally the Colt 45s, but had no idea that they had a cool uniform to go with their prior nickname.

Next, maybe my Fighting Illini can have a throwback season or more with their uniforms that proudly displayed the image of Chief Illiniwek, which was banned by the PC Gestapo of the NCAA. Chief Illiniwek was always displayed proudly and brought positive awareness to the heritage of the Native Americans of Illinois. Too bad the NCAA is trying to erase that positive imagery.

I'd be curious is Redsfan1507 has an opinion on the banning of all imagery of Chief Illiniwek from the University of Illinois.

This story shows two things :

- MLB front office is group of morons. Do they have a mirror there to look into ?
- how deep U.S. fall in the last 50 years. Not a free country anymore, everything is controlled by "business interests"

Redsfan1507, I've lived around Indians here and there over the years and I've gotta say that you just summed up the take of most all of them in a few words. Columbus Day is here for the foreseeable future, in spite of what your people or mine have to say about it. (I'm Polish, just as was Chris, but the Italians have these sadly mistaken notions about the Despoiler of the Ocean Blue. Small comfort, but it seems certain that it was the New World's True Revenge, syphilis, that killed him. The dude got really weird, really fast.)

As for the rest of that nonsense, it serves you right for sending your children to the white man's colleges. God knows, they don't learn that kind of stuff on the Res. Or in the suburbs or the inner cities, where most of the Indians I've known grew up. (Or in St. Ste. Marie, which is sort of all three rolled up into one, if you include the Canadian side, which everybody up there did before 9/11.)

I have a splendid compromise for the sensitive among us to consider. Wear the authentic unis, but refrain from trying to make a buck off them by merchandising copies. Beyond that, get a life! They're in Texas, for crying out loud, and that particular gun is pretty near religious iconography.

This is ridiculous that this was even brought up by MLB. Doesn't surprise me in this PC world of ours. I have the throwback jersey myself and you don't see me starting a gang called the "Colts". I'm pretty sure members of the NRA will be out in force on April 10 and 20 wearing these jerseys.LOL

It is absolute insanity what people will take issue with these days. The uni is part of their history for Christ's sake and it is ab-so-lute-ly harmless. Actually looks kind of cool. And I am not a gun person either btw. Find some other pointless cause to assail, leave the uniform alone.
