The Astros may or may not wear the original Colt .45s uniform complete with the smoking gun graphic, but at least the decision will be the team's to make.

Major League Baseball had originally told the Astros they couldn't wear the classic uniform with the gun on it as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration. When the team debut in 1962, the Colt .45s featured a smoking pistol, with the smoke making up the "C" in "Colt."

Now the team will make its decision known on Friday whether it will wear the awesome uniform or cop-out and wear a plain, boring, inaccurate uniform (can you tell which side I'm on?). In a statement released Thursday, the team said:

"Over the past few months, the club has been in discussion with Major League Baseball about whether to wear the authentic Colt .45s jersey. The original logo features the Colts name and a pistol. The alternative jersey would only have the Colts name on the front of the jersey. This week, MLB informed the Astros that the decision would be left to the ballclub.

"The Astros organization continues to value fan input, therefore the Astros have been reaching out to fans the past week to get their opinion on this issue.

"Our fans have expressed overwhelming passion and support for the Astros and our rich 50-year tradition. We plan to announce our decision tomorrow, Friday, March 9."

The team is scheduled to wear the uniform as part of its "Flashback Fridays" promotion this season, wearing the Colt .45s uni on April 10 against the Braves and April 20 against the Dodgers.

The Houston franchise wore the uniform from 1962-64.

MLB leaves Colt .45s uniform decision to Astros

I'm totally anti-gun, and I don't get this at all. It's a Colt 45, obviously referring to the Old West, Cowboy heritage of the city, not a sawed off shotgun or some street piece. There is no relation to gangs, violence, murders, it's an image, for goodness sake.
Some people take political correctness of the charts. Like the Washington Bullets. Yes, a bullet is used in a shooting, but it's an image of something that travels quickly and makes an impact. somehow it's insensitive to use the term Bullet?
The Astros should certainly use this uniform as a throw back to their heritage and celebrate the change in image from the Old West to the forward thinking Astro name named off of their involvement in the space program.

Pictures of guns don't shoot people....demented kids that have never been taught how to deal with morals, responsibility or self esteem issues at home, and guns they never learned to responsibly use, shoot people.

'It DOESN'T take a "Villiage" takes PARENTS...who understand personal responsibility is THEIR job, not someone elses.

As someone from Native American heritage, I can tell you I'm FAR less offended by a sports logo or team name than I am with not getting my Casino stipend because the mail doesn't run on Columbus Day...

People take themselves WAY too seriously.

Restrictions and political correctness doesn't make people more tolerant, or better citizens. Better people do.

It is a good logo, listening to the pretentious anti-gun lobby groups was stupid.  It is a part of the team's history, denying it in order to make the racist to guns people happy doesn't teach anyone anything.  Parents should have the choice to explain the simple history of why they changed their team name, instead of pleading ignorance to a day of lies in a Astros history day.

Yeah, its basically criminal to have uniforms with guns on them.  It'll make violent crime rise for sure!!!!  Ha!  Its like the Washington Bullets changing their name even though they could rightfully claim that it implied speed, not violence.  Or St. Johns changing their name from Redmen, even though it was because back in the day they wore red uniforms head to toe, hence "red" men.  It wasn't anything associated with native americans.  But yeah, there will be shootouts in the parking lots if Houston wears those uniforms...Maybe to replace a gun, they could put a six-pack of the Power on their unis instead?!?!
