Unga, Price-Brent drafted

Posted on: July 15, 2010 2:49 pm
Former BYU running back Harvey Unga – the subject of our “Five questions (or more)” segment Wednesday – was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL supplemental draft by the Chicago Bears this afternoon.

Unga, who was seen as a running back/fullback hybrid coming out of school, was the all-time leading rusher in Cougars history, and he’ll look to make the team while competing against Garrett Wolfe, Chester Taylor and Kahlil Bell to back up starter Matt Forte.

Considering the Bears rushing game was ranked No. 29 in the NFL last year, averaging 93.2 yards per game, it makes sense to give Unga – who rushed for 3,455 yards and 36 touchdowns at BYU – a chance to contribute to a team that needs offensive production.

Either way, it could be a great value for the Bears, who now will lose a seventh-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Also in the supplemental draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected former Illinois DT Joshua Price-Bent in the seventh round.

Truer words never spoken, BE85. I guess I dont understand why Angelo cant seem to figure this out? Sure Im partial, I hate Angelo, but common sense dictates if you suck that bad at running the ball, you draft an o lineman or sign an FA. They drafted one in the late round, hire Mike Tice, and now were all supposed to drink the damn Kool Aid and listen to the fluff on about how theyve "Gelled at the end of last season"? Angelo is the league leader in "Emporers New Clothes" scenarios. Look at the WR- same exact thing. "Oh it will be fine."

Granted another rb isn't the answer for the offense to succeed another threat in the passing game IS the answer. Check out Unga's resume in school. He may be a big man but he can catch the ball and make things happen by breaking tackles. If he could drop a bit of his weight and gain a little speed he could be a huge assett in the passing game even if just at tailback or if used in the fullback spot or in the slot. He is regarded as having good hands and runs hard making the first defender to hit him wish he hadn't been the first to arrive as he hits the dirt. Besides as was said the 29th ranked rushing game could use another set of talented legs even if Chester Taylor was signed, and Garrett Wolfe and Kahlil Bell who both averaged 5.5 yards per carry, the knock on both of these guys are their hands obviously something I've pointed out is a strength for Unga. ALL of these uses and roles for a guy who will cost a 7th round pick. Sounds like quite the value pick to me. With Unga also standing 6'0 244 he's bigger than Bell at 5'11 212, Wolfe at 5'7 185, Taylor at 5'11 213, and Forte at 6'2 218. He also adds value as a developmental fullback who will also compete for time there with Will Ta'ufo'ou (5'11 247), and Eddie Williams (6'1 249) neither have played in a regular season game. With veteran Jason McKie now with the Saints there is an opening at fullback. I'm guessing that's where Unga will start, yes START day one. He'll add another threat to run the ball or catch the ball out of the backfield but will need to improve his blocking abilities to truly be relied on as a fullback fulltime.

Chester Taylor will not be just a 3rd down back/backup.  He'll be the Bears Starting running back game 1.  I think Forte becomes that other RB.  The Bears O-line is in dire need of upgrades, but towards the end of last year once they found out where guys should be playing the line played much better.  Will they dominate people; probably not.  Doesn't matter much they're division is going to be pretty tough this year.

Well as an Illinois fan, I'm excited for Josh Brent. He did alot of dumb things off the field, but when he was on it, he looked like he could have been an NFL draft pick. He is a big guy with a good burst. I wish him the best and he should do well as 3-4 DE.

As far as the Bears go, I will echo what others have said. It's about the offensive line, not the running backs. Sure this guy can help, but if they continue to get no push up front and let guys get in the backfield then it does not matter who they have back there.

Unga has the size and power to switch to a FB in the Bears offense. I think he can do no worse than beating out Eddie Williams as the 2nd FB. Will To'uo'ufo will win the FB job. One thing they did not mention in the article is that Unga has great hands and that fits in well in Martz's offense. GO BEARS!!!!

I was really hoping the Hawks would go after him

Anyone watch this guy the last couple seasons.  He is an animal. Fights for extra yards, always falls forward, runs over people, and is very agile for a big man.  As a short yardage guy he will be great.  I could even see him as an every down back in the right situation.  He looks like a guy that could be very Steven Jackson-esk.

I agree with some other posters, that I am not sure what the bears are doing.  They have Forte and Wolf.  I don't see Unga being a guy that they need to waste future draft picks on.  But who knows.  Maybe they know something that I don't.

I just know that the hawks could use a third down back really badly.  And a guy with upside like this would be a welcome addition.

Unless they make the Playoffs everyone is likely gone anyway and they will run the ball again. They feed the fans that you cant throw the ball in Chicago thing and the fans buy it. Buffalo and New England and other cold weather can but for some reason we cant in Chicago.
