People Want Terrell Owens on the Raiders? Really?

Terrell Owens and the Oakland Raiders would, on the surface, seem to go together like lamb and tunafish (or perhaps you prefer spaghetti and meatball?): a rambunctious, potentially over-the-hill, often self-absorbed wide receiver with a team known for its dysfunction and willingness to bring on disruptive personnel.

But this is supposed to be the "new Raiders," the team that dumped JaMarcus Russell and finally managed to put together an impressive draft class.

Surely, signing Owens is a complete non-sequitur to Oakland's offseason thus far, right?

Maybe not -- while there haven't been any actual rumors that the Raiders are interested, per se, there are a few folks out there tossing the idea around as if it wouldn't be all that horrible.

Adam Rank of first proposed it yesterday, pointing out that both recently humbled parties deserve a second chance (although wisely admitting the notion that it could be a "hacky premise and an easy punch line").

And today, Monte Poole of the Oakland Tribune busted out a similar trope : the Raiders need TO.

So, um, do they?

Talent-wise, absolutely. Owens isn't an elite receiving option anymore, but judging him on his performance in Buffalo (based on their miserable quarterbacking situation and even more miserable offensive line) is a bit unfair -- he's clearly better than he was last year and definitely better than any other wideout on Oakland's roster.

There are other good arguments out there too: He'd immediately give new starter Jason Campbell a legit, proven weapon. He'd provide (potentially) a mentor for Darrius Heyward-Bey. He would be relatively cheap to bring in. His attitude would improve immediately just by being removed from the tropical paradise that is Buffalo.

The only question (and it's a really, really obvious one) is how will Owens mesh with the team's chemistry? Poole points out that having his own VH1 show is a nice outlet for Owens' self-indulgence, but I'd probably argue that still having his own show probably means that TO hasn't maxed out on humility quite yet.

That being said, though, if the Raiders went down this road, it would likely be with a cheap, incentive-laden contract that minimizes their risk. Worst case (or best case, if you write about the NFL for a living) is TO poisoning the locker room, causing a full-on silver and black meltdown that embarrasses the Raiders.

Either way, if it happens, it's worth bringing some popcorn.

The Liberal media? Where the hell did that come from? And has to do with this how? It is the CONSERVATIVE media who would have the problem with TO. If it had anything to say about it. Please wise one tell me of the lies Owens has stood up to? The lies are what YOU are perpetuating, he has called every single one of his QBs derogatory things, Queer,(Garcia) Quitter,(McNabb) Plotter,(Romo)(want more?) As well as throwing them under the bus. Week 11 of last season? LOL had to stretch for that one didn't you? Want the number of his league leading drops ol clank hands has? By the way, who won that game? Oh that's right the other team. Howabout week 15? 2 catches 15 yards? But the TEAM won. In fact checking his stat lines, seems the team did a lot better the less he was thrown to. I smell a fantasy football freak. Nothing wrong with that. But in REAL world, object is for the team to win the game, and he does not offer an atmosphere conducive to winning. I love when you and others say his former teammates have nothing bad to say about him, well that is because most players have enough class or at least politeness not to bash others to the media. But what positive things does TO say about his teammates? What does TO have to say about anyone besides TO? Except to say it wasn't his fault, it was the QBs, it was the offensive line, even you are taking up for him by blaming the QBs in Buffalo, how about if clank hands got open more the QB would be able to throw a little quicker. Let's see, so on great team TO is great, but on bad team he is bad, hmm. That would make this...oh yea! A TEAM GAME. And TO is not team player. I see you are Steelers fan, well pancho, the Steelers haven't been winning because they have the most devastating talent in the NFL, they have been winning because they are a team.

The Raiders need Owens like they need a hole in the head. Wait a minute, they already have one in Al Davis.

Being a former Falcons season ticket holder and now a transplant in the Raider Nation, I can't believe I hear myself saying this but the Raiders should trade for Vick and sign T.O.  I was in Atlanta for the 4-12 meltdown and truely hate Vick.  But he and T.O. are better than the alternative of overated Campbell and Heyward-Bey.

I find it funny when some people honestly think that the Raiders already have a good set of receivers. They're not good, they haven't done anything and yes they could use somebody like Owens and YES he would easily be their best receiver if he signed there. I saw a few times last year a bunch of Raider receivers dropping the ball on consecutive plays. There was one drive I recall that Murphy dropped 3 consecutive passes on 1st, 2nd and then 3rd down. All passes were right in his hands. Punt time. I don't care how bad your quarterbacks were but when your leading wide receiver has something like 40 catches then yes you need some help in the receiving corp.

I think this is all a strange deal.  I don't think the Raiders need TO anymore than he needs them.  He can't find a team right now, but he will.  He may have to wait until someone gets injured, but he will find a team.  I think as of right now, the Raiders have had so much drama since their last SB appearance that they should hold off on this and see what they have now.  They actually have put some good pieces in place considering it is, after all, the Raiders.

Yeah I said that all along. The Bears if any team in the league needs a quality receiver. They have some young talent there but more needs to be done. Martz and Cutler dont have enough offense. Actually the offensive line needs more help but T. Owens? Thats good help.

Mark your words? The only word I'll mark with you is moron. Owens does not go around calling QB's names like you mentioned. He only did it one time and he was exactly right in that situation with that player. Ask the other teammates. TO is a great WR who still has a couple years left to produce. He is a far better teammate than the media portrays. Unfortunately the liberal media tends to hold grudges against anyone who stands up to the lies they perpetuate. So TO will never be a media darling. Who cares. It's about football you fool. If TO is washed up how do you explain Week 11 last season? 9 catches, 197 yards? With a Buffalo QB throwing him?

he will call Jason Campbell a homosexual or a wuss

Campbell needs to be called a homosexual or a wuss. Possible both. Chances are they will get along becasue TO will be his go to guy and thats what he wants. Campbell is alot like the kid from The Sandlot, hes just going to close his eyes and hope he doesnt mess up to bad. If T.O gets there and gives Campbell a attitude similar to his maybe he wil realize being on the raiders you need to play like Ben R. man up take some hits, bounce off and make plays. I already see the raiders being close to 8-8 this year, with T.O they will do better.
