Steelers confirm Tomlin extension

Posted on: July 23, 2010 1:53 pm

Earlier this month, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the Steelers had given coach Mike Tomlin a three-year contract extension. You might remember our post about it from July 13.

Today, the Steelers finally got around to announcing it.

The only difference from the initial report: the Steelers say it’s actually a two-year deal with an option for 2013.

“Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time,” Steelers’ president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success over recent years.”

Said Tomlin in a statement: “I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I am excited to have the opportunity to live and work in this great city, and to focus on the true matter at hand, which is winning football games and bringing another Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh.”

Extensions like this are meant to be broken.

Not with the Steeler front office mentality...they never have, and are not about to start buying out of a bad contract.

I wish the Bears new how to find quality coaches the way the Steelers do.

I guess you are right, two out of three will get you into the baseball and basketball HOF.  The problem is one must do a hell of a lot more hitting and shooting to start with...not just three at bats.

What is a good defensive coordinator? One who is good at run defense, pass defense, and special team play. Tomlin's run defense at Minn was fairly good but the pass defense was miserable and near last in the league.

Hes not an X's and O's kind of coach?  Dont let his persona fool ya son Tomlin was a damb good D coordinator before he got this job he does just fine with the X's and O's.  This signing is no suprise the Steelers are known for making the right choice and sticking with thier guy through thick and thin.  This is just one in a string of many contract extensions in line for Mike.  I wish the Bears new how to find quality coaches the way the Steelers do.

You are the one that will rot in hell with comments like you posted regarding the death's of Kaye Cowher and Miron Cope. I cannot believe there are people like you allowed to walk free among us.

Despicable!

Mike Tomlin did a decent job last year... there were simply too many "bad" things going on with this team outside of football. Throw in a terrible secondary and an injury to Troy Polamalu and you had the makings of a season best forgotten.

Tomlin will bring 'em back and do fine.

Inherited a Cowher team? I agree that Cowher made that team and left Tomlin with a good cast to get to the Superbowl his first year coaching. Let's see: Bettis retired, Willie Parker couldn't stay healthy (he's gone), Santonio Holmes also gone because upper management couldn't get along with him (he just so happened to catch the winning TD in the Superbowl....an unbelievable catch at that!), and oh yeah....Big Ben has gone off the deep end and chasing cat's rather than avioding sacks. Yeah it's Tomlin's fault because adult males that earn millions of dollars can't motivate themselves to play a game of pigskin. Men, or shall I say BOYS!!!! If you can't stay motivated and earn a living doing something that your abilities has granted you the chance to do, then nothing on God's green earth will motivate you. That's just a lame excuse this generation has succumbed to. Millions of MEN get up and go to a job they don't like everyday because they are motivated to put food on the table for their families!!!!! If you need motivation to get paid that much money to work out, stay in good health, and have fun for three hours a week and 17+ weeks a year, then you don't need that job!!!!!!!!!!!!
