Browns sign second-rounder Montario Hardesty

Posted on: July 26, 2010 9:48 am
Montario Hardesty, the Cleveland Browns' second-rounder, has come to terms with the team on a deal according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain-Dealer .

Joe Haden and T.J. Ward (the Browns first- and other second-rounder, respectively) remain unsigned, but the news that Hardesty's headed towards camp is good for Cleveland: regardless of the rushing totals for Jerome Harrison at the end of 2009, there's a reason why Cleveland moved several picks to slide up and grab Hardesty when they did. (Outside of "he's really talented" -- Harrison's run was a bit of a scheduling mirage.)

Specifically, the Browns believe that they can be a much more offensively potent team with some Hardesty and Harrison splitting carries. Oh yes: they have Jake Delhomme starting at quarterback (most likely), so the more firepower they can generate at the running back position, the better.

Wow I'm surprised how these guys who write these columns like to rip on Delhomme. I'm pretty sure every Browns fan knows he had a terrible season last year. Here is where this year is different.  Delhomme is now playing behind a lot better offensive line than what they had in Carolina. Plus does anyone remember a certain interim Offensive Coordinator from a couple of years ago....... jeff Davidson ring a bell. He was terrible at calling plays for the Browns just like in Carolina. Yes I'm a hopeless Browns fan but with Haskell helping Daboll out there is reason to believe this season will be better than the last several. Go Browns!!!!!

Yeah what was that random attack on Jerome Harrison.  Scheduling mirage?  Okay so Kansas City, Oakland, and Jacksonville aren't exactly full of pro bowlers on defense, but if it was so easy to get that many yards, running backs would do it all the time.  The Browns got Hardesty so they could have two solid backs.  Depth in a word.  For the longest time we would only have one good running back (Pre-09 Jamal Lewis, Reuben Droughns), but no depth, and when those backs got hurt the Browns were destroyed

What does Jerome Harrison have to do to prove himself to the Browns?

He had a tremendous showing two years ago against Buffalo on Monday Night Football, and filled in admirably for Jamal Lewis at other times during the year.  Then last season when Lewis was hurt early in the year he ran for well over a hundred yards against a Bengals defense that was ranked fifth in the league last year.  Then at the end of last year when Lewis was hurt again, he runs for over five hundred yards in three games, including the 3rd best single-game rushing performance in NFL history.

I like Montario Hardesty a lot and think he was a great pick-up by the Browns.  But Harrison's earned the right to start for this team, and Hardesty should be coming off the bench in short-yardage situations where a smallish-guy like Harrison should get a rest.

At first I Was skeptical of this pick . with The "Ghost" Jerome Harrison ans the trade for Peyton Hillis i wondered why did they trade up to pick him when the Browns were and still IMHO In dire need of a upgrade at Wide Receivers ? i questioned that strategy unless the Browns were planning on running the Wishbone this year . the more i have read and heard about him the more i like the pick and if he can stay healthy . he has already had reconstructive knee surgery he can help my beloved Browns . look for a punishing three headed running attack this year with Hillis , Harrison & Hardesty .. now about That Receiving corp ???.
