The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs has reported to training camp early and looks noticeably sleeker. The eighth-year pro had a tough season in 2009, in part due to injury and in part due to his weight creeping into the 280s. Suggs is back around his 263-pound rookie season weight.
"I'm good," said Suggs. "Training camp, you always got to get your mind right for training camp. My weight is good, and I don't want to get too low. Last time I got down below 260, I was too small and got my butt kicked against their run. I'm ready to play."
The Ravens hired Suggs’s linebackers coach from Arizona State, Ted Monachino, to coach the outside linebackers in 2010. Ostensibly, Ozzie Newsome made that hire with the idea of improving Suggs’s pass-rushing prowess in mind. Suggs is explosive off the edge, but the greatest aspect of his game is playside run defense. He is as natural a block-shedder as the NFL has to offer.
