Vikings offer Favre even more money

We’ll go ahead and get this Brett Favre update out of the way, as well. Which I’m sure will be just fine with you.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune , the Vikings have put together a compensation package that would give Favre $20 million to play this season – a significant raise from the $13 million he already was scheduled to make. Apparently, $16 million would be guaranteed and the other $4 million would come in the form of incentives.

Though Minnesota coach Brad Childress pled ignorance during his Tuesday news conference, Judd Zulgad writes “Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe admitted Favre had ‘told a couple of guys on the team that he was going to retire,’ but the Biloxi (Miss.) Sun Herald reported an unnamed person close to Favre's family said he hadn't made a decision whether to play a second season with the Vikings.”

I know this is easy to say from the outside, but at some point, shouldn’t the Vikings say, “Screw it. Enough is enough. Thirteen million dollars is plenty. If you’re going to continue to jerk us around, forget it. We’ll go with Tarvaris Jackson. You stay retired, Brett.”

OK, that won’t happen, but would anybody blame Minnesota if it took that tact?

Vikings offer Favre even more money

The slant of your article is old news.  Yeah Brett Favre held Green Bay hostage and hasn't handled the retuire/unretire situation with the tact befitting his legacy in the game.  That said, he is dealing with injuries and at 40 isn't bouncing back as well as he'd like.  He hasn't ever said he doesn't want to play, but rather not sure if he can play.  More money is just Minnesota saying, "we need you, want you and are willing to do whatever is necessary to have you play for us".  The real story is not Favre's decision (as I don't think there is much of a decision happening, more like reality setting in).  it is what are the Vikings going to do about QB issues outside of Favre, and why didn't they make any atttempt to address it over the last year.  Tavaris Jackson is dreadful and the Vikes know it.  Seemed short sighted to me that they haven't addressed that simple fact, preferring to roll the dice that Favre would be available for another year.  You sleep in the bed you make.

Vikings offer Favre even more money

Well, as Humphrey Bogart said in Casablanca, a bribe has worked before.

Its Aug. 4.  I say he's w/the team on Aug. 25.

All fantasy drafts must therefore take place after that date.

More money means he can buy more pain meds for his ankle.

Vikings offer Favre even more money

Brett Favre will "un-retire" after halftime of the third preseason game. Just in time to join the team for the regular season. Does he think he is fooling anybody?

Vikings offer Favre even more money

At this point, I'd rather have the vikings win a super bowl than the Cowboys.  right now they are the only team I see standing in the cowboys way in the NFC.  Of course this is all pre-season talk and I hope when the season starts the cowboys start their usual decline, but that team does have so much talent.

The Saints?  The Packers?  Without Favre I don't even see the Vikings winning the division.

CoolI agree but money cures a lot of ills...I'm asking some Cleveland fans to weight in; is this any different than LeBron?

Vikes SHOULD Offer More

If anyone has to ask why the Vikings would do this, then you are a moron (no offense).  The reasons are obvious.  First and foremost, the chance to win a Super Bowl.  Can the Vikings sneak into the playoffs at 10-6 with Tavaris Jackson? Yeah, I think so.  Could they even win the wildcard round? Yeah, I think so.  But they aren't going to win a Super Bowl with Jackson.  Last season, the Vikings were one play away from winning the NFC Championship and going to the Super Bowl (one horrible pass interference call from getting the ball in overtime).  With Favre as the QB, they'll go 12-4 or better.  Favre has one more year left in him.  Even if he is only 80% of the QB he was last season, that'd still be pretty damn good.

Besides the Super Bowl reason, how about the fans, TV time, publicity, merchandise, general buzz around the Vikings.  Having Favre around is great for business.  The Vikings need him for another year.
