Elvis Dumervil (he of the brand new contract that features $43.168 million in guaranteed money) left Wednesday's practice with an injury, according to Broncos Rapid Reporter Lee Rasizer .

Dumervil was injured during one-on-one drills and headed to the trainer's room "clutching his right arm to his chest."

Now, a report from Adam Schefter on Twitter indicates that the injury is a torn pectoral muscle and that the Broncos' linebacker is out "indefinitely."

Schefter noted that Dumervil could miss up to four months, but it's also entirely possible that the Broncos place the star on Injured Reserve and end his season quite prematurely.

Dumervil was the NFL sack leader last year and was awarded the monster contract just a few weeks ago -- obviously, this is a disastrous scenario for the Broncos if it unfolds as reported.

Follow us on Twitter and tune into the Broncos Rapid Reports for more information as this situation devlops.

Update (12:15): Mike Klis of the Denver Post reports that Dumervil will have surgery to repair the torn pectoral muscle and has will likely be out until "at least November." This means the Broncos are now faced with a serious decision as to whether they keep him on their roster for 2010 and risk him being unable to return (and wasting a roster spot in the process), or place him on IR and end his season early.

It's worth noting that if a player like Darrelle Revis or Vincent Jackson showed up to their respective team's camp today and suffered the same injury, the likelihood of them receiving the long-term contract they're seeking would absolutely plummet.

Of course, this is the nightmare scenario for the team in question: inking a star to a monster deal with a ton of guaranteed money, and then seeing that star get injured before taking a regular season snap. Neither scenario, clearly, is very enticing.

Update (12:21) : The Broncos aren't commenting on Dumervil's injury (yet -- the team is expected to address it later today). Football Outsiders ' Bill Barnwell has pretty bad news for Broncos' fans though; their injury database shows only four players -- Chris Fuamatu-Ma-afala, Ruben Brown, Dave Brown and Matt O'Dwyer -- who returned from pectoral tears to play in the same season. The first three suffered only partial or slight tears. O'Dwyer suffered a full tear and was missed 12 weeks on the PUP list and returned to play four games.

In other words, expecting Dumervil to return in 2010 is a serious long shot. Almost as much as the Broncos finding someone to replace his production this year.

Report: Dumervil out 'indefinitely' after injury

Okay okay, attack the Cowboy "fan" all you want for celebrating an injury to anyone -- completely classless, I agree.  But, come on DeMarcus Ware "phoned in the season"?  Perhaps you missed the part where (1) after a 20 sack season and Greg Ellis leaving Ware faced more and more double and triple teams and (2) did that while playing with a stress fracture in his foot and knee, kneck and back injuries.  Nobody is going to get 20 sacks every year but Ware still turned in a Pro Bowl caliber season, despite the injuries -- far far from phoning it in.See how balrog01 disagreed with me without resorting to name calling GoRomoGo. That's a quality post. I withdraw my "phoning it in comment".

What's with all the hate from the Cowboys fans? At least Dumervil will have an excuse for his lack of production unlike DeMarcus Ware who signed a big contract and then phoned in the season

You added an extra b to my name but that's cool I do the same thing sometimes. I know everybody who underperforms has an undisclosed injury. But let's not forget that everybody is injured. When the guys on tv were making excuses for him it was because the Cowboys lost the guy on the other side not because of some injury.

Don't call me a tool because I consider myself an implement and don't call anybody retarded it makes you look like a juvenile.

cubbufffan1 - You are such a tool.  Ware had limited sacks last year due to injury.  An injury he PLAYED with.  Go back to your hole and enjoy your upcoming failure of a season.

To everyone else, this sucks to see happen.  A guy who actually earned his contract being taken out in camp?  Total bum deal.  Being a huge D-Ware fan I love to watch great LB's in action.  To all the Broncos fans who aren't as retarded as cubbuffan1, hopefully the injury turns out to be not as bad as they think.

And please quit lumping all Cowboys fans into the same category.  I'm not hating on all Broncos fans over the idiot I went after in this post.  I'd never cheer an injury, even if it was Eli Manning.

Now McDaniels has his excuse.  The Broncos D was a sieve last year in the second half with Dumervil.

Looks like that guy Ayers that is the majority of what they got in the Cutler trade will have to produce.

No worries, Donko fans. Tebow will pray for him or he may burst into tongues and heal Elvis himself. It never hurts to have God on your team.

Report: Dumervil out 'indefinitely' after injury

Don't lump all Giant and Cowboy fans in the same boat as those two clowns. As far as Dumer I was happy to see a player get paid and good one at that. Shame he got hurt, I hope he gets healthy. Those clowns don't realize there is life outside of football or they just have not life at all. Injuries linger after football and even if he comes back healthy when he retires he will be banged up and will be spending a lot of the money he gets on surgies, doctors, meds.... why these rookie contracts have got to go so the veterans can get paid in case of injuries. Teams are so scared to pay a player because of this happening because of rookie contracts are so insane... Bradford making 50 million guaranteed? What a joke, hope that rookie salary cap is what fixes everything.

Report: Dumervil out 'indefinitely' after injury

Only the trashiest of the trashy fans are happy when a player gets hurt. I seem to remember Cowboy fans being in an uproar about the Philly fans cheering while Michael Irvin was down on the turf at the vet.....

You wanna talk about karma? After making comments like that I would be watching the injury reports out of Dallas real carefully if I was you.

Classless.
