Kentwan Balmer's absence from 49ers practice has been notable, but considered something that wasn't a big deal. At least until today (which -- COINCIDENTALLY? -- is the first day Sportscenter reports that he paid for some former teammates to join him for a trip in Cali) anyway.

Matt Maiocco of Bay Area CSN is reporting that Balmer's time as a 49er might be at an end, as he's been absent from practice without excuse.

Originally, Mike Singletary granted Balmer a two-day leave of absence from practice to deal with "a personal matter" but that time had passed and Balmer still hasn't shown up to camp.

Only a truly cynical person (and huge caveat here: I do not care, as a fan, for the University of North Carolina, so take that with how much ever salt you'd prefer) would point out that Balmer is dealing with a "personal matter" (of an undisclosed nature) at the same time as his alma mater, UNC, is being investigated for agent-related matters that intimately involve not only Balmer, but his own agent, Gary Wichard, as well.

Update (2:56) : David White of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets that Singletary had this to say during Wednesday's practice: ""I told Kentwan to be here this morning. He is not. We're going to move forward." So, yeah, seems likely Balmer could be cut. On the bright side, that'll give him plenty of time to chat with NCAA investigators.

Kentwan Balmer = quite possibly the biggest mistake of the Nolan era.  Waste of a first round pick.
