Kurt Warner returns to the NFL (as an announcer)

Kurt Warner retired from the NFL after another impressive 2009 season in which he led the Arizona Cardinals to a NFC West title and a playoff berth.

He never waffled on his decision (despite apparent pleas from the Cardinals brass) and headed back to his roots, jumping on the NFL Network and doing color for an Arena Football League game. He must have done pretty well too (preseason NFL action kept me from watching, I'll admit it) because he's being picked up by Fox to work the NFL this year.

The announcement of Warner's addition (and Jim Mora, Jr., as well) will be made some time Monday, according to USA Today 's Michael Heinstand .

Kurt, coming off a possibly Hall of Fame career, had lots of opportunities and wasn't interested in doing a full season," Goren said. "He'll find out if this is something he really wants to pursue. And we didn't have a full-season slot open. So the deal, which came together in the last week, worked out well for everybody."

Warner's season will start October 10, when he (awkwardly?) calls the Saints-Cardinals game. That makes sense from a "knowledge of the parties involved" angle, but poor Matt Leinart, huh?

That'll be one of three games he works for Fox this season, in which he'll be paired with Chris Myers or Chris Rose.

The best part of all of this though? HE'S REPLACING TRENT GREEN!

No, no, seriously -- Green worked with Myers and Rose last year and now it'll be Warner.

For those unaware of the awesomeness of this fact, Warner got his start in the NFL when he replaced Green as the starting quarterback with the St. Louis Rams, igniting the "Greatest Show on Turf" run.
