Torry Holt now a free agent

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston reports that the Patriots have released Torry Holt. The Patriots originally put Holt on IR, but the wide receiver and organization came to terms on an injury settlement.

Holt is undergoing knee surgery this week. By asking for (and receiving) his release, it’s possible the 34-year-old veteran could be aiming to still play in 2010. He’ll have to find a team, first.

If healthy, Holt's precision route running allows him to still get separation against No. 3 corners. Plus, he'd be an excellent mentor for younger wideouts.

Torry Holt now a free agent

I am a huge Holt fan. I watched him play back in his NC State days. Class act and true pro. That said, I'd prefer he come here to my Panthers to teach our young core some things. Steve Smith is a helluva competitor and a damn talented pro, but he can't compare with the maturity Holt offers. I wonder if he's just going to sign with the Rams to retire? You can't trade an injured player I don't think, so maybe he asked to be released in order to sign with the Rams and retire. Either way, Holt belongs in the hall.

As much as I don't want this to happen (being a Giants fan) the Redskins would be a good fit for him too.  Good compliment to Santana Moss, good mentor for younger receivers (Devin Thomas) and a veteran QB in McNabb.  Plus Joey Galloway's there so they both can reminisce about the good ol' days.

St Louis should bring Holt home

Agreed, if nothing else as a player/coach, or even assistant coach.

This trend of discarding great players from a team is disgusting, and ammendments to the salary cap, and Collective bargaining agreement should be made.

I'm not trying to whine here, but the Rams need a solid veteran to help mold their you receivers.  Robinson looks the best thus far, which doesn't say much.  Avery and Barton need to step up.  A mentor can add coolness to the play.  Not to mention that Holt should retire a Ram and this would allow him to finish with who he began with.  Bradford looked alright in the Minnesota game, but on a few plays, it appeared as if the receivers were at fault to the lack of completion.  Holt may never be a #1 receiver again, but if he is on the field, he becomes a threat to the defense.
