Denver takes it on the chin with Alphonso Smith

How’s this for a disastrous personnel move: in 2009, the Broncos traded their 2010 first-round pick to move up and select cornerback Alphonso Smith in the second round (37th overall). Saturday, according to Smith’s agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Broncos have traded the corner to the Lions for tight end Dan Gronkowski.

The Lions desperately need help at corner. They brought in Chris Houston over the offseason, but he had trouble holding onto a starting job in Atlanta (his aggressiveness in man coverage is inconsistent). The No. 2 corner is Jonathan Wade, a fringe player who would not have continued to start if he’d stayed with the Rams. Smith should compete for Detroit’s No. 2 job right away.

To further emphasize how disastrous the Smith pick was for the Broncos: the man Smith was traded for, Gronkowski, was also drafted in 2009. Detroit selected Gronkowski in the seventh round. Seventh! Thus, the Broncos essentially traded a first-and second-round pick for a seventh-round pick.

i love how all the guys who leave new england, for the most part are busts serves em right too. Talk about a overrated coaching staff seems like teams owners listen to the media too much instead of hiring someone who can actually coach..

That shmuck couldn't even get out of his 1st draft without screwing up! As a Broncos fan I hope, nay pray, that Pat Bowlen has the common sense to drop this guy like a hot potato after this season. How do you figure you can win by dumping everybody for mediocrity? I doubt that anybody figures that McDaniels has done anything but tear apart a team that needed a few tweaks and turn it into a trainwreck. Remember that this guy wanted to get rid of Cutler....for Cassel! I don't think getting rid of Cutler was necessarily a bad thing but his 1st move was to alienate a decent QB while trying to get a 7th round filler named Cassell. Getting rid of Smith is another joke. If he wouldn't have given away those picks in the draft we could've had a quality TE like Dickson who the Ravens took with the pick McDaniels gave them. We could've, and should've, had Maualuga but he grabbed a corner that people said had issues. Moreno is turning into another disaster and longshoting Tebow and giving away 3 valuable pick for him should prove that he doesn't know what he's doing. And let's not forget Marshall. I have a hard time believing that a guy that had no team related issues when Shanny was at the helm was causing all the problems. I'm sure that McDaniels had something to do with the spat, considering all the trouble this guy has cause on that team already, but his part didn't make the papers.

Wow, I thought I was making some bad moves on my fantasy football teams but the Bronco's are making me feel like a great fantasy GM. I guess the new motto in Denver is "One and Done." You either produce the first year or your out, sent to the NFL graveyard in Detroit. Thats OK, the Lions will take young Mr. Smith and make him a part of a young up-start defensive unit.

What a joke this turned out to be...our last 2 drafts now, he has done some stupidity to move up and select nobodies....and he basically admitted as much. In addition to this story a PS should have went below it reading: Denver traded up several spot to select a TE who was a blokker and not a pass-catcher, thus losing us more draft pikks in the end....geez!?

This type of thing is exactly the reason that Mcdaniels wont be back next season, unless of course he gets 11 eleven wins this season (which is not likely).  He seems to fall in love with guys not based on where experts see them in a few years, but in something he (and only he) can see in them.  I think the dude is off his meds, and if he isnt, maybe he needs some. He passed up some great defensive players in 2009 and 2010, to get what?  A quarterback that might be more of a contributor at H back, a wideout with a busted foot, a running back that doesnt have world beating speed and cant move the pile to save his life.  Who has he traded away?  Players that can play but maybe dont kiss his a&$.  Essentially, they just traded for a less talented tight end than Schef for the cost of a first round pick. Hopefully this is the last year for mcdaniel, maybe we could get Kubiak back to denver...

When does Pat Bowlen start to realize he made a horrible mistake in hiring "Lil' Joshie"? This guy is incapable of handling veteran players without trading or dropping them for a "bad attitude". Bring in Tebow, that will make people like him...Great idea kid!
Get real, and get a qualified coach. It's embarassing to be a Bronco fan.
