DeMaurice Smith: 'lockout is coming in March'

Of all the frustrating offseason storylines , there's one that's perhaps most annoying: the impending NFL lockout in 2011. DeMaurice Smith, the union leader for the NFLPA, confirmed his belief on Wednesday that he think a lockout is coming.

“I still feel that a lockout is coming in March,” Smith told Bloomberg Sports .

Smith's biggest point of contention is the NFL refusing to actually provide financial information relating to their claim that they're not pulling in enough cash. (Enough here, of course, is relative.)

“If this model is not working, i.e. teams are losing money, then we’re willing to see the evidence of that and make the changes,” Smith said. “But prove it. If not, what’s the justification for getting a billion back from us?”

Smith, along with most players, doesn't care for the also-impending possibility of an 18-game season.

“We don’t look at two extra games as being divorced from the health, medical and safety standpoint,” Smith said. “It’s impossible to divorce one part of this from the whole.”

That may be true -- however, it seems pretty likely that the league will get its 18-games one way or another. Also likely, as expressed by Smith's quotes, is the NFL locking its players out.

Owners and players are just too far apart right now, and because the 2010 season is beginning and because 2011 seems so far away (regardless of whether it's true or not), the urgency to really sit down, negotiate and hammer out a deal just isn't out there for either side.

Which is why there's a pretty good chance that the most important people, the fans, will end up suffering the most.

DeMaurice Smith: 'lockout is coming in March'

I hope there is a lockout - so these morons (players and owners) can discover what members of the NHL & MLB learned after their strikes in past years: that the fans who contribute to their becoming rich & famous tend to get a little pissed-off and are slow to return when they are spurned and left without a favorite sport for a season, half a season, missed playoffs (MLB), or whatever.

And that is especially true when the strikes/ lockouts are most often over issues of pure greed on the part of one side or another - and involve sums of money with which the Average Fan (who is now stretched enough just to pay the week's wage it costs to take 4 people to even a  baseball game now; hell, the Cubbies are charging $50 for Bleacher seats these days!) simply cannot relate.

Does anyone ever wonder what would happen to attendance & player salaries if everyone just got sick & tired of all this crap - and stopped going to games??

Maybe network tv contracts, cable deals & Revenue sharing would keep the players & owners afloat anyway - but I doubt the Yankees would have tried to get $2500 a pop for "Legend" section seats if they thought fans were going to flip them the bird and not show up!

Not to mention I wish the Jets a lot of luck in selling their remaining PSL's (don't even get me started on those things, what a disgrace/ holdup of loyal fans), once fans get their heads around the idea that there might not even be any football next year!

D.Smith: 'lockout coming in 2011' GOOD LET'S GO!

Here is a better idea!  As a public, let's lockout the whole process; by not attending the games, not pruchasing the team and player merchandise, by not purchasing the Sunday Ticket package and then lets allow the simple theory of supply and demand run it's course.

The fans cost to view these teams and athletes will continue to rise as long as demand (fan purchasing dollars) increases or even remains constant.  Why should anyone (OU fan and appreciated all Bradford did and accomplished BUT) make a guaranteed $50 million?  Rookie or All-Pro veteran!  It is crazy and not just extended to pro athletes: top level executives of the major corporations will take another entire blog space!

Greed is simply the name of the game and if we, the public don't recognize the monster we have so lovingly helped create, it will consume all of our abilities to interact.  At the current inflatinary rate of professional athlete salaries, by 2020 it will only be CEOs of major corps. that will be able to afford season tickets or even attend the majority of their teams home games.  I know for one, they have already priced my family out of being able to attend games in person and this year we have even cut out the Sunday Ticket.  Sad, but inevitable!

Lockouts don't work in the NFL. Money can still be bet on scab football and gambling is the only reason the NFL is so popular. After the the top four at each position, you need a program to know who's playing. There are NINE 40-man taxi squads -- a.k.a. the CFL ... and hundreds of "can't miss prospects" who missed the draft but can still run the 40 in 4.4. The owners rule. The fact contracts aren't guaranteed means there will be a lock-out. The best players get rewarded. They also get injured. You have to make a quick payday as a player ... unless you can play forever like Favre. Owners spend money on stadiums, not hospitals. Any idea what the owners have to pay on the players health insurance? Those career-ending injuries add up. Now there's a bargaining chip.

RETIREMENT PACKAGE????? These players make millions of dollars each year.  Why should the ANYONE have to take of them if they piss their money away?

It comes down to personal responsibility- a concept that has fallen out of favor these days.

If it is not broke don't fix it.

It is really crappy from a fans standpoint that the nfl & nfl players are even in position to lockout. The players & league keep getting more money each year and the now they just are not satisfied until they suck every last penny out of the fans who enjoy the game. I guess billions of dollars in profit are not enough. I wouldn't be suprised if in the future the only way you would be able to watch your team is with purchasing Direct tv & sunday ticket or PPV just so they can make more money off everyone.

To me I want to keep a 16 gm schedule and the only salary adjustment I would make is have set contracts for rookies so there is not a big hassle waiting for a player to negotiate before he has done anything.

It is pretty interesting that the league doesn't see 18 games as a safety concern... but the umpire is?
I mean the whole game from gun to buzzer is a safety concern! lol. it's football!!!

put the ump in pads and send him back out there. as for the player, i agree - no 18 game season.

Bad idea...

Here's a good idea...

Lock them out, disband the union, draft college kids that actually want to play, have an 18 games season, and make player compensation reasonable again.

Players are overpaid as it is! It's still a game. U played it for free in High School and College. Now it is time for you to make a bit of change. So don't be greedy. Play the game you love. Make a honest living and stop price Gouging the fans. Because when you get paid 20 Million Dollars, Ticket prices go up for us.
Also, The Owners make a lot of money. Don't let them lie to you!
Rookies should have a pay scale. Earn your $$$$ boys.
We love Football. Don't ruin it for us because of greed.

Colts that would make too much sense and to easy to do.  This is such BS it sickens me.  Everyone is making money hand over fist and we (fans) are the ones that will suffer.

Greedy bunch of morons if you ask me.
