Dockett fined $5,000 for pre-kickoff tweeting

Darnell Dockett is pretty active on Twitter, and that's a good thing, as he's typically a pretty funny fella on the Interwebs. Last week, though, he was a little too active for even the NFL's tastes, and he's been fined $5,000 for tweeting inside of the 90 minute pre-kickoff "no electronics" window.

That's via Darren Urban of the Cards' official website (but on Twitter, natch ) who also points out that Calais Campbell got fined the same amount for a hit on Sam Bradford.

The interesting -- and obvious -- comparison here is Chad Ochocinco, who was fined $25,000 for tweeting during a preseason game .

Ochocinco's fine was five times as large as Dockett's and there are two good reasons why. First, Chad tweeted during a game (it's irrelevant for this argument that it was just an exhibition), which is technically the same thing because of the window, but it's most certainly a worse offense because of the potential cheating/Spygate-like implications that could be involved with electronic messaging during games.

Second, Ochocinco clearly is on the NFL's radar when it comes to shenanigans (on the field anyway) and unlike Dockett, this isn't exactly his first run-in with the (NFL) law.

The lesson as always: if you Tweet it, we will see it. And if it's inside the 90 minute window, so will the NFL.

The stupid scooter (segway) only "hipsters" or people desperate for attention use in that picture probably cost him 5k anyways.

It really is a non story almost, and throwing this up as a "story" is all the more reason for them to keep doing it, they'll get attention, the one thing they crave ..

I wish someone would just blow up twitter, when are these fools going to learn just go and play football on sundays. To many players want all the attention on them, they all have this hey look at me attitude. You would think a player 90 min out from game time would be worried about the game plan and reviewing the playbook and not tweeting. Hey Dockett you will have all week after the game is over to play around on your phone!

...the word "Amen".  Seriously?  Roger Goodell is a tool.  I understand the reasons why players shouldn't "Tweet", but for that "Tweet". Dockett should have received only a warning.

If Darnell Dockett received a $5,000 fine for that, Ben Roethliesberger should have had his hands cut off for what he did!

I enjoy those mocking the NFL for what they think is a dumb rule.  Just thank the Patriots.  As for the rule what is so hard about putting the phone down 90 minutes to kickoff and actually going back over the game plan and preparing for the game instead of tweeting?  It's a rule and it's not a hard rule to follow.  All the players know it and if they decide to ignore it I don't really know why they shouldn't be fined.
