Singletary: 'We will stop Drew Brees'

Mike Singletary appeared on a KPIX radio show with Dennis O'Donnell Thursday and was asked about trying to stop Drew Brees during the 49ers Monday Night Football matchup with the Saints.

He replied by saying, "We will not try to stop Drew Brees. We will stop Drew Brees. Next question."

Naturally, this provoked some curious questions from the media as to whether he was guaranteeing that the Niners would shut down the defending champs' offense. As Matt Barrow of the Sacramento Bee notes, Singletary backed off the comments a bit, pointing out that there was never any sort of guarantee.

"I just said we would stop him," Singletary said. "I'm certainly not going to go into the game thinking we're not going to stop him. If that's the case, I need to stay home."

So, really, nothing too crazy, at least in the quotable realm that is Singletary-isms. At least in comparison to the "sniff out the rat" tirade, this is tame.

Plus he has a pretty good point: even if San Fran knows that Brees is going to pull their pants down in front of the world with an MVP performance, they can't go into the game thinking that, because then there's no real reason to play in the first place.

UPDATE : Doug Farrar at Shutdown Corner comes through with video of Singletary's interview referenced above. Not mentioned is that Singletary freaks out about the whole Yahoo! deal whereby Jason Cole reported Jimmy Raye was having trouble getting plays to Alex Smith. Also not mentioned is like another four or so minutes of awesomeness. Do enjoy.

Singletary: 'We will stop Drew Brees'

I agree with you on the home field advantage on MNF.  The two teams have a long history.  As far as what happened to the Niners last week.......maybe they are not as good as you and the rest of the "so called experts" think.  Bottom lined, they got spanked.  "Far better team"?  I think not.  Is it possible that San Fran is just a bad team??????  I understand your prediction, it looks better having the Saints 1-1 rather than 2-0.  Makes the Pats looking better after getting beat up by the Jets.  My prediction 34-10 Saints.

Singletary: 'We will stop Drew Brees'

As a Bears fan, I've always loved and respected Singletary as a player. I'm not quite sure to think of him as a coach yet.

But this doesnt help. As Raiders sukbalz least have part of the statement grounded in reality. He should have said we will do everything we can to stop Brees...not that we WILL stop him. If Brees comes out tonight and blows SF away (which we all know is quite possible), he's going to look really really stupid.

Seattle had their way with SF like a fat guy on a donut....and Brees > Hasslebeck by a LOT.

Saints 35-17

Singletary: 'We will stop Drew Brees', Coach.  You won't.

Drew Brees will decide how mnay yards he throws for, not your porous secondary and limited pass rush.

I certainly appreciate your need to 'circle the wagons', but have at least some part of your statement grounded in reality.

Saints 34-10.

Singletary: 'We will stop Drew Brees'

Mike is as intense now as he has ever been. The niners are lucky to have him. If his players could catch his fire, then all the "communication issues" would go away.
He believes his team will stop the saints qb.
Its doubtful that ANY nfl coach wouldnt believe they could stop any specific player on any given gameday. If they didnt, they wouldnt be an nfl headcoach! I'll watch the niners just because of the coach!

Yeah I agree with 'hall-of-fame player not making the jump to hall-of-fame coach' argument.

Loved Singletary as a player, loved his skills, attitude intensity.  He has successfully carred that intensity and attitude with him to the HC position, but I don't think he has the overall skills to get the 'Niners where they expect him to get them.

Yeah, his players made some mistakes, but he was obviously out-classed in that match-up.  Not that I know everything, but I really don't see them shutting down Brees.  Singletary certainly thought, 100%, that they'd smother the Seahawks and get an easy win...he is obviously confused about something.

Singletary: 'We will stop Drew Brees'

Mike Singeltary is awesome! That stare he used to terrorize opposing qb's is still there! The comment about stopping Brees is what it is. It's his belief that his niners can stop the saints qb. I would be surprised if any nfl headcoach didnt believe they could stop any qb on any given gameday. I would expect nothing less of the leader of the "monsters of the midway". The niners are lucky to have him, if his players can get his intensity, they could become a playoff team.

Singletary: 'We will stop Drew Brees'

It happens in every sport: great players try to become coaches, and somehow their skills on the field don't translate into success. Mike Singletary looks like he's headed for the same place that Wayne Gretzky went in hockey. Unfortunately, Hall of Fame greatness holds no guarantee of success as a coach. I consider him to be just a notch above Brad Childress in Minnesota, who continues to be the worst NFL coach (and ISN'T in the Hall of Fame either).
