Larry Johnson released; what now for Skins?

L. Johnson (US Presswire)
Amidst all the Michael Vick hoopla was the announcement that the Redskins have released running back Larry Johnson. This is news only because Johnson rushed for over 1,700 yards in back-to-back seasons five years ago.

This season, Johnson, 30, has five yards on two carries. He wasn’t able to contribute on special teams, he didn’t have the speed or quickness or hands to be a third down back and he’s not an explosive everydown player. So, keeping him made little sense.

Pro Football Talk reported earlier that the Redskins signed Chad Simpson. He’ll compete Keiland Williams for the No. 2 duties. When you’re starting running back is aging, often bruised Clinton Portis, the backup running back is sort of important.

The Redskins should strong consider bringing Ryan Torain off the practice squad. The former fifth-round pick of the Broncos has the right kind of skillset for Shanahan’s zone running system. Torain showed good one-cut quickness in the preseason. In fact, don’t be floored if he winds up being the team’s featured runner at some point this season.

Larry Johnson released; what now for Skins?

Larry is washed up. Big time...After one of the greatest O-lines of all time left the chiefs after Weigman left in his prime, John Tait left from FA and Roaf and Shields retired it also took away Johnsons career. He was never the same back after that and never had good vision. Rarely breaking a decent run. Hell......look what charles did with the same "poopy" oline that LJ had last year before he was cut. Maybe hes too focused on spitting on woman, Trying to teach kids art instead of playing football with them like the court ordered, beating his wife/gf multiple times, throwing drinks on woman. Trust me, The Pats arent going anywere near this locker room cancer. If there anything like Pioli/Haley there not going anywere near a prima donna trouble maker/ attention whore like this. Id be surprised if any team besides the bengals or cowboys go after him. I kinda hope the chargers go for him now that Mathews is hurt just so the chargers could suck a little more.

Willie Parker, maybe? He had a similar role last year with Rashard Mendenhall, and if they activate Torain, they'd have 3 solid backs.

IF Washington is smart they bring up Ryan Torin and let him play with Portis.
