The NFL is a passing league? Ha!

We hear all the time that the NFL is a passing league these days. That’s true, it is. But Sunday’s events put at least a small, temporary dent in the notion.

The top five passing leaders in Week 3 so far have come in losing performances. Take a look:

1. Kyle Orton 37/57, 476 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT – Broncos 13, Colts 27

2. Philip Rivers 298/53, 455 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT – Chargers 20, Seahawks 27

3. Eli Manning 34/48, 386 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT – Giants 10, Titans 29

4. Drew Brees 30/38, 365 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT – Saints 24, Falcons 27 (OT)

5. Chad Henne 26/44, 363 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT – Dolphins 23, Jets 31

What’s odd is that none of these quarterbacks played any garbage time, either. Usually, big passing numbers in a loss are a product of hurry-up offenses facing prevent defenses. But Orton’s Broncos were just one step behind the Colts all afternoon. Rivers nearly led the Chargers to an overtime-forcing touchdown on the final drive. Manning’s Giants didn’t fall behind until late in the fourth. Brees’ Saints played an extra period. And Henne’s Dolphins had a potential game-tying drive late in the fourth.

Don't expect this trend to hold true week in and week out.

Brilliant observation eight zero...oops other than the fact that he leads the league in passes over 20 yards and had a 63 yard pass that was a perfect strike Sunday. Yep brilliant, if not for those pesky facts!

Eightzero, your comments are ridiculous.  Go back and read what you said. 6, 7, 8 yards per play move the ball quite effectively when you have 4 downs to get 10.  The Colts were lucky to win that one.  Also, going deep all day does nothing but wear out your defense having to go onto the field all the time.

Kyle Orton is a joke of a QB. If you only look at stats you might not agree, however if you've watched him play you'll know what I mean. I remember at one point in the game I counted somewhere like 11 straight passing plays, none of which traveled more than 8 yards before being caught. The guy simply cannot get the ball down the field, he's terrible at it. Of course he's going to put up big stats constantly throwing the ball 6,7 yards all game long. However he's not going to win many games for his team unless they develop a deep passing game.

total yards is not a true indicator of the top passing performances, teams that are losing throw more, Sanchez threw for 260 yards, 3 TDs and no ints, I would say that is a better performance than most on the list

I could have sworn in week 2 rivers was taken out of the game to rest due to his success that day. Final drive to win against KC maybe but not twice back to back....And to tell you the truth rivers got in the end zone four times in a rwo on a td that had a flag put 5 back still made it in. Then a 5 yard pen. on the succesfull 2 point conversion had to be redone with was good. 4 end zone trips in like a minute off the clock was rivers style. The 12th man in seattle looks to be back if it was ever gone. All in all im pissed at the record but not too scared yet. Vincent Jackson hit us with his ignorance but Ill still accept him back. Once the WR fill ins loose the butter fingers Rivers raTING WILL be even better. And who the heack has a knee surgery on an acl to make the playoffs few years back. Can you say Bump in respect for the #1 competitor at QB P. Rivers....

The current difference between KC and the bolts so far is defense, the Chiefs are playing it if you hadn't noticed.  They have run the ball particularly well and it looks like they will win most games because they will win the turnover battle.  Cassel isnt the greatest, but they have playmakers on offense now so they have a servicable offense.  Rivers is awesome but he failed to put it in the end zone on the final drive for the second straight week.  I don't see the bolts finishing up too bad, but i think KC has a legit shot to go 10-6, which would only require them going 7-6 in their remaining games, this shouldn't be too hard for them.
