Singletary apologizes for poor sportsmanship

Last Sunday in Atlanta, the 49ers suffered about as tough a loss as a team can suffer. Consequently, head coach Mike Singletary was in no mood to shake hands with Falcons head coach Mike Smith after the game. So, he didn’t.

Wednesday, Singletary apologized. "It was poor sportsmanship on my behalf," he said. "That's all it was."

Matt Barrow of the Sacramento Bee asked the coach if he was “in a daze” after the game (those of you who saw Singletary’s postgame behavior know that Barrow’s question, while perhaps harshly worded, wasn’t unfair).

"I don't know if any of you guys ever get ticked," Singletary said. "I'd be the first to tell my kids, 'That's wrong.' I should've gone over and shook his hand. ... "I chose not to for a number of reasons. But nothing else was on my mind. But I was disappointed and that was a very honest feeling after the game."

Singletary apologizes for poor sportsmanship

I like how we criticize certain people for the same thing that we excuse other people for doing the same EXACT thing. One poster even eluded to the LeBron issue of being a poor sportsman. BUT!!! We all heard very little over the issue of Peyton Manning not shaking hands after losing in the Superbowl last February. I guess it's because of his perceived "good-boy" nature that we exempt him from criticism, but that's totally unfair.

Singletary apologizes for poor sportsmanship

I like Singletary. I'm glad he admitted he'd showed poor sportsmanship, as opposed to LeBron who justified his jerkness when he refused to shake hands after a defeat last year.

I hope Singletary can get it pulled together and get his team going on the right track.
