Seahawks trade Branch to Pats for draft pick

The Seattle Seahawks traded Deion Branch to the New England Patriots in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick, according to reports.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Branch, who was a staple on two Pats championship teams, was sent home from Seattle on Monday, where he'll "replace" Randy Moss.

Branch was traded to the Seahawks following a very productive 2005 season that saw him rack up nearly 1,000 yards with five touchdowns that resulted in a holdout -- the Pats picked up a first-rounder for exchanging him.

Since he's been with the Seahawks, though, he's been significantly less productive, topping out at 725 yards (in his first year there), although he did catch 15 touchdowns over his five years there.

Branch's role with New England won't precisely be that of Moss; clearly they're different receivers. But he's a guy that Tom Brady and the Pats had a pretty good little run of success with -- there's no reason to think that he can't help this team, even if his skill level is on the decline.

Earlier today, Pete Carroll was asked about Branch's absence from Seattle's practice and wouldn't comment on it beyond "It's personal."

The Seahawks are the big winners in this deal, even if Branch does improve the Patriots offense, having picked up a decent draft pick for a player who didn't provide much to their team.

Seahawks trade Branch to Pats for draft pick

As others have alluded to: 4th round pick for Branch seems a lot, given Moss went for a 3rd round pick. And this follows M.Lynch (who is still a durable mid-20 year old RB) going for a 4th round pick. The whole Moss-trade and this follow-up seems again to indicate that the Patriots are more about making a point internally than dealing and solving an issue for the immediate good of the team. It's like the boss who can't communicate with his/her employees so disappears into his/her office; but here, given the industry, the boss simply trades the person he can't communicate with.

Wow this is pretty shocking, considering what receivers are gonig for these days I wouldn't of expected anyone to give up more than a 6th rounder for Branch. Getting a 5th rounder for him would of even surprised me. A small 30+ receiver who hasn't done anything in years and is rediculously injury prone. I think they would of been happy to get any draft pick for him. Belichick got annally raped on this one.

Branch is a good player and will help Brady & The Pats.  He is not a #1 receiver but he can get open and will be where Brady wants him as far as sticking to his routes.  Brady can stick it in your face mask if you run the proper routes.  This is classic NE in getting the right price for a player.  Ironic they did not pay Branch when he wanted his Super Bowl MVP compensation and he replaces Moss who they did not want to pay either because of age and a few other chemistry issues.  There is a long list of these players for NE which have been discarded.  As a team you have to avoid what the Cowboys did in the 90's and tie all your money up in aging players because it is a recipe for decline.

Its hard to tell what Deion what have been if he would have took less with the Pats because of a few nagging injuries, an overrated QB in Hasselbeck, and being a receiver for Seattle in general usually turns out bad.

Agree.  After Moss was traded for a 3rd, Jackson should have been obtained with that same pick.  Sign him multiyear, or just for the remainder of the season and get compensatory afterwards, it would leave NE better today than with Branch and with a 4th rounder to trade later.

Good move by the Patriots and I'll tell you why.
2 First Round Picks
2 Second Round Picks
2 Third Round Picks
2 Fourth Round Picks
There's only so many picks you can use in a given year.  They give up one of their fourth rounders in exchange for a guy that might help them now and have done nothing to damage the future.  If he doesn't do well chances are you have too many rookiees and you'll have to cut some one next year.

Report: Seattle trades Branch to Pats for 4th

The way Branch has played and all the injuries a 4th is about right, although I would have liked to have gotten a 3rd. This is a good move as it will free up time for some of the younger guys, Butler and Tate. I like how Carroll has turned over the roster so far. Now if we can somehow move Hasselbeck.
