Tweet costs Owens $5,000

The NFL has fined Terrell Owens $5,000 for tweeting too close to game time, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.T. Owens

One hour before kickoff of last week’s game, Owens (or someone who works for Owens – it doesn’t matter in the eyes of the NFL), tweeted: "A lucky fan wearing my jersey 2day will get a signed football by Me & Ocho Cinco! My asst will pick U out!! Good luck!"

League rules prohibit players from tweeting within 90 minutes of kickoff. Owens’ fine is the going rate for pregame tweets; earlier in the season Darnell Dockett was docked (or “Docketted”) $5,000 for the same infraction.

Owens admitted his violation after the game and complained that he was “unappreciated for something noble or (for) the charitable things that I've done." (The football he referred to in his tweet was a donation.)

But in the NFL, rules are rules.

During the preseason, Owens’ BFF, Chad Ochocinco, was fined $25,000 for tweeting DURING a game. (Just curious…if a player was ever stupid enough to tweet during a regular-season game, do you think the fine would be even larger than 25K?)

I'm sorry, but NFL can't monitor whether people are focussed on the game which is pretty much what you're saying was wrong with tweeting before-hand. Yeah, he was tweeting, big deal. Why should the NFL get to charge him for that? It didn't interfere with the game. Oh yeah, because the only real reason for giving him a $5,000 fine was just to make some easy extra cash. A phone is an outward distraction and if it disrupts his focus, his teammates can respectably confront him about it later. It was a rediculous fine and everyone knows it. And for the record, I hate twitter, I think it's stupid, and I'm not a fan of TO, so my comments aren't biased at all.

just saying, I really don't see the big deal about whether or not he tweets before or even during a game. I don't see how that affects the game whatsoever. Anyone care to explain the significance of his violation to me because I'd sure like to hear why it was worth a $5,000 fine.

Freedom of Speech, Slavery? When the hell are you people going to get it through your heads. There are RULES!!!!!. And they have to be followed.  Doesn't matter if you think they are stupid or he does for that matter. There are alot of rules where I work that I think are stupid, dumb and a waste of time, but they are paying me, so I have to follow the RULES or look for another job. These knuckleheads just get fined and it just escalates higher every time they dont follow the RULES. In the real world we don't get fined, we get called into Human Resources and we get a talking to along with a warning. Maybe we get 2 warnings. But after the 3rd time, its off to the unemployment line.

It's not even remotely close to infringing on his freedom of speech, let alone slavery.

How the hell can anyone consider "followng rules" as slavery, or even infringing on freedom of speech.

Do any of you people realize that TO and Ocho have been a pain to their teams but never to to the fans.

Why was he tweeting before the game when he should have been practicing and preparing himself for the actual game.  That's the problem I have with it.
