After a two-day vacation to recover from the nightmare that was Randy Moss moving through waivers, what's more exciting than a Friday afternoon report that Zygi Wilf, who's been in Minnesota just hanging out for a few days, was so upset at Brad Childress for circumventing his authority and dumping Moss that the Vikings owner nearly fired his coach and kept his star wideout?

The answer to that rhetorical question is "nothing," so let's break down the noise ESPN's Ed Werder is making -- according to a team source, Wilf was so "irate" that he nearly canned Chilly and retained Moss. This, presumably, is why Moss wasn't actually released on Monday.

Additionally, Werder reports that a Vikings player informed him of individual meetings Wilf held with the players in order to determine "how much support remained for Childress among veteran players."

This is obviously a bombshell, but it's not entirely mind-blowing considering just how things went down with Moss' release.

Childress recently got an extension that doesn't have a buyout clause, so Wilf would probably prefer to avoid throwing a ton of money down the drain by firing him.

That being said, anyone who thinks Chilly's pants aren't a little warm right now is just flat-out delusional.

Gruden for coach of Minny, but probably a perfect fit for Big D.  No line in Vegas on it yet. Let the professor go back to the classroom. Get a warrior, Gruden.

That might happen but the ownership is the problem in big D.  JJ had Parcells, and he pretty much turned it around for that team.  The one playoff win in God knows how many years of futility is because of players Bill brought in and he had enough of clashing with JJ and that was it.   Any coach going to Dallas will be a puppet and no more.   The only thing that will bring a respectable and legitimate coach to Dallas is money and they know their time is short.  Might work initially but not in the long run.    Good luck there and keep packing the seats for playoff 'just misses' and 'super bowl' contenders on paper...  blah blah blah

Report: Wilf nearly fired Childress, kept Moss

Every week he makes a decision that looks as though he is watching a different game

I agree 100% with you here. This man does not have the respect of anyone on this team. The fact that this owner has stayed with him as the head coach as long as he has is insane. His QB does'nt even listen to him and all this is done right in front of the entire team which in turn loses him all credibility as the boss. Because of frustration Childress then tries to show an iron hand by his handling of the Moss situation and comes off as even more of an idiot. Then friday He has the audacity to call out Percy Harvin questioning his effort and his heart??? Percy has been out there and played hurt or in severe pain constantly. The fans love him. Ownership loves this guy. Brad Childress is simply put: a moron. The Vikings should cut their losses with this guy either right now or no later than the end of this year. He has alienated everyone, lost the respect of his team, and completely screwed up the Vikings season. I hope he never lands a job in the NFL again. Both he and Wade Phillips should never be allowed to coach on any level again!!

I don't see how Childress keeps his job after this season.  I mean I liked the guy in Philly as an offensive coordinator but he hasn't shown proved potential as a Head Coach over all.  Some guys are just cut out as coordinators and that's all.

Report: Wilf nearly fired Childress, kept Moss

AUGUST 17TH 2010!!!!

That is the day Childress became a lame duck coach, when the coach can't keep his players from leaving practice and they get on the Owners plane to 'recruit' a player, when the coach couldn't there is something wrong.

The coach needs to be respected if not down right feared to succeed in todays NFL.

Childress is not the leader of this group. It was a costly and ill timed extension. Regardless of the Moss drama............

Childress is finished.

No one respects Childress, he will be gone at the end of the season, they should have fired Childress when he went too far with his authority and released Moss.  Favre does not respect Childress and I am sure the rest of the team thinks Childress is a lame duck now.

Let's be real here, if the Vikings are .500 or under after the regular season, Childress is gone anyway. And IMO, its not Randy Moss who is helping him out the door. It's ol' #4. Times are sure different when you are losing games, unlike last years fairy tale season. Favre didn't participate in any camps, is banged up, and doesn't seem to be really helping Minny's cause right now. Throw in all of Favre personal issues, and it becomes more and more distraction.
