After a two-day vacation to recover from the nightmare that was Randy Moss moving through waivers, what's more exciting than a Friday afternoon report that Zygi Wilf, who's been in Minnesota just hanging out for a few days, was so upset at Brad Childress for circumventing his authority and dumping Moss that the Vikings owner nearly fired his coach and kept his star wideout?

The answer to that rhetorical question is "nothing," so let's break down the noise ESPN's Ed Werder is making -- according to a team source, Wilf was so "irate" that he nearly canned Chilly and retained Moss. This, presumably, is why Moss wasn't actually released on Monday.

Additionally, Werder reports that a Vikings player informed him of individual meetings Wilf held with the players in order to determine "how much support remained for Childress among veteran players."

This is obviously a bombshell, but it's not entirely mind-blowing considering just how things went down with Moss' release.

Childress recently got an extension that doesn't have a buyout clause, so Wilf would probably prefer to avoid throwing a ton of money down the drain by firing him.

That being said, anyone who thinks Chilly's pants aren't a little warm right now is just flat-out delusional.

;     &nbs
p;      I can;t speak for everyone that you are referring to when you speak of trashing Farve. I don't dislike Farve or think he is horrible. I do however, think that he is far too banged up and hurt to play effectively right now. If he was 70 or 80%, let him do his thing. But, I think he is running at 25-30%. He has a blown tire for sure so he can't move very well, his throwing elbow is hurting his heat and accuracy, and I think with all the pain and dysfunction going on, he is a little gunshy and making really bad passes to avoid the big hit (remember the last game where he just about threw a pick 6 off back foot? Should have taken the sack, but he is really hurt). Same thing against Green Bay. I know he's a warrior and wants to play, but it has gone too far now. He is hurting the team playing in this bad of shape. I think he wants to hit 300 consecutive games. He shouldn't care. Nobody will ever come close to what he has done.

This is my opinion. Others may trash on Farve and call him washed up, old, or whatever. I am just telling you what I think, and I don't think he's a bum. I do think it's time to rest a few games. If Jackson can win 2, then Farve will be back and the Vikes have a slim shot at the playoffs. Really, I doubt it now that the team and owner has all but lost faith in the coach, with good reason, I think. Childress has always put his ego and emotions ahead of smart decisions based on what is best for the team. Dungy never had that problem, or Chucky for that matter, and they have had some monster egos to deal with. The coach shouldn't have an ego that matches that of the most egocentric players.

Actually, most Vikings fans will say that the Vikings win DESPITE Childress. We only had a great year last year because of Farve. Actually, I was bittersweet at the end of last season because we had such a great year, but it also meant that Childress wouldn't get canned.<br />

That's right, CalGrad!!  The window of opportunity for the Vikings opened quickly and is closing quickly.  Everyone knew the magic Favre had last year could never be repeated.  The Lions have something special brewing up there.  If you NFL fans have not seen it yet, take notice of Ndamakong Suh (sp?).  He's 21 years old and dominating grown men 10 years his elder!!  Wait'll he grows up!!

Should have gotten rid of both, Moss will quit on you and then trash your organization in post game interviews. Childress is just straight up incompetent. Honestly though they should not give up yet, that is a slap in the face to the entire city. If it were an abudance of injuries where a large number of stars were unable to play for the rest of the year I'd say ok blow it up. However this talented roster needs to keep trying, with an interim coach.

Been a Vikings fan for 30+ years. Chilly is worst coach they ever had - and the Moss thing has nothing to with my opinion on that. I have been a member of for 3 years. So you are 100% wrong about fans not wanting Chilly's head - including last season. The Vikes won in spite of him not because of him. He makes constant errors in judgment during games and has no business being a head coach in the NFL. And shame on Wilf for not pulling the trigger. Chilly is killing this team every day. Win or lose.

Report: Wilf nearly fired Childress, kept Moss

2 scenarios would play out in my mind depending on whether the Vikings win or lose on Sunday if I were the Wilfs.

1. If they lose to the Cardinals:

Fire Childress immediately. At 2-6 You have no shot at the Playoffs and you give Leslie Frazier a trial run and see if he can regain the trust of the players and the fans and you find out in general if he is a capable replacement long term.

2. If they defeat the Cardinals:

Fire Childress immediately and hire a proven winner. At 3-5 you have a chance to get to the post season but you need an experienced veteran coach that has proven he can get it done in a situation like this. I laughed off the suggestion that some people made about John Gruden but after considering some things, I have 3 reasons why he would be the best candidate if you are going to make an all out run at this thing in Favre's last year.

1. Gruden and Favre have worked together in the past running the same offense so there would be a minimal learning curve.

2. There is a mutual respect between those two and the rest of the team would respect Gruden due to his past accomplishments and I think that they would respond to his fiery, emotional style of coaching and play with some passion which completely contrasts with the current "leader".

3. Gruden has proven that he can take over a talented roster that was on the cusp of a championship and get them over the top. He took over the Bucs after Tony Dungy was there and led that team to a Super Bowl win in his first year.

Both scenarios would have Childress gone. He disrespected the parameters that were set by ownership by going rogue and cutting a talented yet controversial player without following the guidlines. That is insubordination and should be grounds for immediate termination.

He should of kept Moss and fired Childress.Childress is not a good head coach.Besides last year he never coached a good season.Everyone knows it was Farve who had that team going last year not Childress.Childress didn't do much with the Vikings until last year. All the talent on that offence and defense and Childress can't win games. If i was the owner i would of fired Childress just because he dropped a great player who the team just got 4 weeks ago for a 3rd pick. Why do people think Childress is a good coach.Last year was his only good year with the Vikings.Farve had alot to do with that ...
