Nick Collins reprimanded for fan incident

Following Green Bay's Week 3 loss to the Chicago, safety Nick Collins was involved in an incident with some fans -- the alleged actions included a racial slur being yelled by the Bears fans, followed by Collins throwing his mouthpiece at the patrons.

A local news station captured video of the incident and the NFL announced the Wednesday afterwards (it was a Monday night game) they would investigate the matter, and on Friday night the Journal-Sentinel reported that Collins was reprimanded by the NFL but not fined.

Ray Anderson, NFL VP of Security, sent a letter to Collins telling him his conduct was "unbecoming of an NFL player" and "reminding him that throwing anything at fans is not defensible."

The NFL's investigation didn't determine that the fan used a racial slur, but did find that the fans in question yelled profanities at Collins.

Collins was apparently given the "benefit of the doubt" because of the "heat of the moment" way in which the incident unfolded.

No suspension or fine for Collins probably means the fans were found to be substantially antagonistic, and Collins just gets to keep on doing what he does, albeit on thin ice when it comes to this sort of thing -- any further trouble with fans wouldn't be met well by the league, obviously.

Never even saw this reported a once.  Considering the news is Packers almost every single night that's saying a lot..

Collins threw a mouthpiece!?!?!  Oh my god!!  How DARE he!?  What kind of awful human being could due such a thing.  Nothing done to such a monster?  He " gets to keep on doing what he does" as the article says..!?  I'm sure the fan did nothing but use profanities, he could have never said anything else or done anything else to him!  6 game suspension!!!

I mean, what the hell is this stupid artcile, lol..  The fan didn't do anything of importance, Necik Collins didn't do anything of importance.

You know to engage in an argument with a fan is stupid, but I would love to have seen someone toss the guy over the fence to face him with his comments! Oh wait but then he could sue him for knocking his ass out... I think that if you wanna pick a fight, you should be allowed to get what you asked for! That would make for a little more respectful treatment of other people. As an example, I am pretty sure the guy that Blount knocked the F out at Boise St. watches what and to who he taunts to this day?! If only the players could do the same with fans, now that would be fun to watch. !!

(sniff) He (sniff) called me a name (sniff)
Gimme a break. Is this guy so thin skinned that a little name calling gets to him to the point where he needs to lash out like that? I've seen 12 year old kids that can take it better than that. While I don't condone the fans actions, he accomplished what he set out to do..............get in the players head. I mean, is Collins a grown man or what? There are some fans at any venue, I don't care where you are, that are going to act like imbeciles. If you're a professional athlete, learn to take it. How can you let a little childish bantering from a stupid fan upset you?

Interesting.  The NFL must have been quite thorough in their investigation.

If his conduct was "unbecoming", I shudder to think what they would have done had Collins responded in a more "proper" (relative to the insult) fashion.  Frankly, his conduct was much better than could be expected; all he did was throw a mouthpiece.  If someone was tossing out racial slurs, they would have been lucky to get out with a mere skull fracture.

These so-called "fans" should be dissuaded from getting wasted and hurling insults at opposing players somehow.

So a good followup question is what happened to the Bears fans? You'd hope they got their seats yanked for a year or more or something similar, but then again, Chicago probably gave them a medal and a key to the city.

If they were not tossed, that is a gutless reaction by the Bears organization and the NFL.
