Giants' WR Smith could miss Sun with strained pec

The Giants are the only double-digit favorite in the NFL this week, as they go against the hapless Dallas Cowboys. Still, you've gotta think that Steve Smith, their top possession receiver and go-to guy on third down, straining a pectoral muscle and leaving practice isn't a good sign, especially when his coach is so vague about him playing this weekend.

"He had trouble driving his arm after the injury, so he couldn't continue," Tom Coughlin said. "I don't have anything to tell you about him until they do all of the tests."

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride called didn't sound optimistic about Smith playing, referring to his injury as a "huge loss" before pointing out what a difference maker Smith's become for the Giants.

"He's the most polished receiver we have," Gilbride said. "He's a guy who has really earned the respect of the defense to such a point that so many of the things they do are designed to stop him, and that's what has opened opportunities elsewhere."

Gilbride also noted that the Giants wouldn't necessarily shift the depth chart if Smith was absent, but instead would rotate players like Mario Manningham and Ramses Barden into his spot.

As our our Giants' Rapid Reporter Alex Raskin noted Coughlin informed the media that Smith strained the pec muscle while reaching for a pass and "tried to return but couldn't pump his arms as much as he wanted."

Multiple reports indicate that Smith is being sent for tests and that while the team hopes to have him ready for Sunday, there's no guarantees at the moment.

The bright side here (unless you own Smith in fantasy football anyway) is that the Giants have a number of receiving options -- if they think Smith playing risks the his long-term health, Mario Manningham can step right into the starting lineup and the Giants would still have a pretty good shot at taking out Dallas, even if the humbled 'Boys are a 'sleeping giant.'

I'm gonna go against the grain here. If Smith doesn't start, it seems like the Cowboys could key on Hakeem Nicks. I think it makes things a little more interesting. I'm not saying the Cowboys win, because right now I don't think they could beat a team named Off. I hope Smith starts personally. He's on my fantasy team. ha
