Any hope for (immediate) future success from the Panthers could take a hit as early as today, with Pro Bowl running back DeAngelo Williams possibly heading to injured reserve, thereby ending his season.

According to Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Panthers are "strongly considering" putting Williams on IR with a "strained arch."

Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer also believes that we've "probably" seen DeAngelo's last game as a Panther this year.

At some point, The Onion is going to release a spoof about the Panthers putting everyone on IR, but this is a move that makes sense for Carolina.

Because they're not competitive (at all) this season, and even though Williams is in the last year of his deal, if the team wants to re-sign him past this year (which they've indicated they do), putting additional workload on an injured back in meaningless games is a fruitless exercise.

Update (1:10): DeAngelo Williams was officially placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ending the running back's season with the Panthers (and, possibly, his career in Charlotte, but more on that once it becomes an issue.) Jonathan Stewart and Tyrell Sutton didn't practice Wednesday, meaning Mike Goodson should get the, um, panther's share of carries for Carolina on Sunday.

Jimmy Clausen also missed practice on Wednesday, meaning Tony Pike projects as the likely starter for the Panthers Sunday.

Wow I didn't even think about being a Bengals fan.  I still think being a Sixers fan is far worse then either a Bengals or a Panthers fan.

i guess the only good thing is that we will be getting either the first pick or a top 3 pick
my hope is that either Luck stays in school or the Bills pick first and get Luck because i think the real need is at reciever and if they can draft AJ Green, i expect this team to improve on offense. AJ Green would take the heat off of Steve Smith and possibly even open up David Gettis or LaFell while he's at it.

This season was bad to start with for the panthers.  Now, the injuries continue to pile up.  It's a complete joke to watch the panthers execute on offense.  I am sure ready for this season to be over.

this has been a terrible seen to be a panthers fan i tell you.  i guess the only good thing is that we will be getting either the first pick or a top 3 pick for sure in this draft.  but i think next year will be better for us because its not like we dont have any of the pieces to be successful we were just division winners 2 seasons ago and also the team who finishes last in the nfc south usually has a good season the next year so hopefully that will be the case for the panthers as well

If you think Pike has brighter future then Clausen you are a moron.....Not even close
i just dont see much in Pike like others do. i dont know what it is, i just wouldnt trust him running my team as a rookie, but the fact is, he has to now, but i think Clausen is better, he showed in the Bucs game that he can play. maybe my worry on Pike was after i saw the game that the Bearcats had vs. the Gators, people kept saying all the Bearcats needed was to play a big game, they did and Pike didnt look that good, despite his stats, he lost badly.

Pike has better future ahead than Claussen.
where's the proof?? I have seen Pike in college, not much at all did i like, he got hurt and his team didnt miss him at all, the coach leaves and Tony Pike can't even compete with the Flordia Gators, sorry, but all Pike has is size, i am not big on his arm at all, i think Clausen's arm is stronger than Pike's.
Even if he throws 5 picks this weekend. I'll bet he hits on a few big throws too.
if he throws 5 picks, that would mean he's WORSE than Clausen and if he hits a big throw the game would already be out of hand.
