Any hope for (immediate) future success from the Panthers could take a hit as early as today, with Pro Bowl running back DeAngelo Williams possibly heading to injured reserve, thereby ending his season.

According to Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Panthers are "strongly considering" putting Williams on IR with a "strained arch."

Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer also believes that we've "probably" seen DeAngelo's last game as a Panther this year.

At some point, The Onion is going to release a spoof about the Panthers putting everyone on IR, but this is a move that makes sense for Carolina.

Because they're not competitive (at all) this season, and even though Williams is in the last year of his deal, if the team wants to re-sign him past this year (which they've indicated they do), putting additional workload on an injured back in meaningless games is a fruitless exercise.

Update (1:10): DeAngelo Williams was officially placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ending the running back's season with the Panthers (and, possibly, his career in Charlotte, but more on that once it becomes an issue.) Jonathan Stewart and Tyrell Sutton didn't practice Wednesday, meaning Mike Goodson should get the, um, panther's share of carries for Carolina on Sunday.

Jimmy Clausen also missed practice on Wednesday, meaning Tony Pike projects as the likely starter for the Panthers Sunday.

For a RB a strained arch is very significant. YOu can't plant your foot and make cut back moves as easily. Basically it's like having a nail in your foot that you can't remove, as anyone who's ever had it can tell you, like i have; but hten again i'm no athlete so it really didn't affect me all that much

If Big D is tanking it with a "Strained Arch" then good for him.  I didn't consider it till someone else here said it, I just thought a "strained Arch" was a  wierd injury.  But again good for him, a RB doesn't have that many years to play in this league at a high level, why waste it on this season?  Carolina is a mess.  I mean WOW they are a mess.  If I could say only one thing to Panthers fans to make them feel better is this, "at least you aren't Sixers fans".  Seriously have you seen my basketball team?  And don't even get me started on our Announcers and Commentators.  Watching The Sixer's Pregame show, the actual game and through to the Post game show is the worst thing in sports.

Outlook? Bleak. Can an NFL team forfeit the rest of the year? What happens if Pike is injured this week?

Pike has better future ahead than Claussen. Even if he throws 5 picks this weekend. I'll bet he hits on a few big throws too.

well all the Pike fans can watch Pike get his butt kicked by Balitmore, it wouldnt surprise me if he threw 5 interceptions in that game.

Did'nt think Williams injury was that significant. I guess they are tanking to get the 1st pick in the draft. Carolina is a mess right now.
