Clinton PortisRedskins career may be over. According to multiple media outlets, the nine-year veteran running back was placed on Injured Reserve Wednesday. Portis re-aggravated his groin injury this past Sunday after missing the previous five games.

This news comes as a mild surprise only because some suspected Portis would play in Week 12 after an MRI earlier in the week reportedly revealed no new damage to the groin. But the fact that Washington would make this move despite Ryan Torain being less than 100 percent suggests Portis’ health is worse than outsiders figure.

Portis is an aging, injury-prone runner who has taken some 2,500 hits in his career. He’s due over $8 million in 2011. It’s possible he could remain in Washington only because he is close to Dan Snyder. But the Redskins learned this year with Willie Parker and Larry Johnson that once a runner hits a wall, there’s no salvaging his career.

UPDATE 5:20 p.m. ET: Portis' injury is actually a torn lower abdominal muscle, just above the groin he tore in Week 4. Dr. James Andrews told Portis he'd need surgery. It's very possible that the groin injury and abdominal injury are related. Portis admitted to not being 100 percent when he took the field against the Titans in Week 11. He played because, with the Redskins backfield being short-handed, he felt he owed it to the team.

There is always an exceotion to the rule and that would be LT. Once RBs hit 30, their career is over. Everyone can name LT but name me 2 other back that have had productive seasons after 30. How many backs have eclipsed 1000 yds rushing after 30? And the 1000 yard mark is not the same yardmark as it was when there were 12 games being played. Once they hit 30, they are DONE! Except LT! lol

pensmetsfins - not saying he was not a stud, just saying the last 3-4 years he has not played a full season.  His time of being a full time back is over.

I think LT would beg to differ

Took the words right out of my mouth. I would add Thomas Jones thoughts as well.

dcn and cco22 are you two idiots?    for 7 years this guy was a premiere back and the lone runner in the backfield for his team.   He had a solid career that caught up with him, like it does all RBs.

Clinton Portis headed to Injured Reserve

Portis was a better than average running back at the height of his abilities. He cashed in as a free agent with the Washington Redskins after two brilliant years in Denver. Unfortunately, while better than any other back the Redskins have had on their roster, Portis has essentially been riding the Dan Snyder gravy train ever since.
And Dan Snyder and Portis are tight. A lesson Clinton learned well from his mentor Deion Sanders when Sanders was with Washington as an overpaid underachieving free agent. Blow off anyone you want but always shine up to 'Mr. Snyder'. Mr. Snyder signs the checks!
Don't worry about Clinton Portis. Mr. Snyder will be sure he gets his coin.
