Witherspoon fined $40K for McNabb hit

Will Witherspoon laid a nasty little helmet-to-helmet hit on Donovan McNabb late in the Titans loss to the Redskins.

It was costly to Tennessee during the game and it's even more costly to Witherspoon now, as he's been fined $40,000 by the NFL. Naturally, he's not happy about it.

"I’ll admit, when you look at it on tape, the crown of my helmet hit bottom of his chin,’’ Witherspoon said. “But not $40,000 worth. I was like, are you kidding me? Not when guys are body-slamming quarterbacks to the ground and getting $25,000."

Witherspoon continued his rant, citing other instances where people were fined less money for what he feels are worse acts of physical violence.

"Last weekend Richard Seymour slammed [Ben] Roethlisberger to the ground and he got $25,000," he said. "Vince [Young] gets slammed to the ground earlier this year by Pittsburgh and that was $5,000. And mine is $40,000? That is what is disturbing. I can understand the fine, but there is no understanding to me the amount."

Witherspoon might be right but the NFL wants players to realize they can't hit quarterbacks in a manner that can cause concussions. And he's going to have a hard time arguing his case as long as he's risking that possibility.

Witherspoon fined $40K for McNabb hit

I heard the fine would've been $80K for running down McNabb, but Witherspoon agreed to listen to Rush Limbaugh through the NFL playoffs in exchange for the fine reduction.

Witherspoon fined $40K for McNabb hit

He was not fined for the severity, he was fined for the stupidity.  The NFL takes a hard line about hitting people with the crown of your helmet, especially when the crown hits the opponents facemask. 40K is getting off easy, when it happened I immediately thought 50K or more.

Witherspoon fined $40K for McNabb hit

As a die-hard Redskin fan, I must say that Witherspoon needed to be fined for that hit on McNabb... but $40K is a bit out of hand. I have to agree with the comments he made about other hits on other players not being fined as much. Assign severity to each hit, pick a dollar value, and stick to it.
