Late on Monday night, amid an embarrassing loss to San Francisco, Derek Anderson got caught laughing with lineman Deuce Lutui. In his postgame press conference, Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic asked him why he was laughing (and Somers actually tweeted about asking him before the presser). Anderson's response was straight out of a Coors Light commercial and we've got video.

Here's the transcription for those that are curious:
"It wasn't funny. I wasn't laughing about anything ... Okay, that's fine. That's fine. That's fine. That's fine. That's fine. I'm not laughing about it -- you think this is funny, I take this f----- serious. Real serious. I put my heart and soul into this s--- every single week. I'm just telling you what I do right now what I do every single week! Every single week I put my freaking heart and soul into this! I study my a-- off! I don't go out there and laugh! It's not funny. Nothing's funny to me. I don't want to go out there and get embarrassed in front of everybody. I'm telling you right now -- Deuce and I were talking!"
Somers then tried to ask another question and Anderson just yelled "I'm done!" and stormed away from the podium.

Hasn't the reporter ever heard of gallows humor? Sometimes you've got to laugh or else you'll cry. It's the Cardinals after all.

If I am not mistaken, were the Cards in a superbowl just two years ago, now they will finish last in the weakest division because they did not pay Matt Leinart, Wisenhunt has to take responsability, you need to have a quarterback, Why waste your time with Derek Anderson, The Patriots,Colts,Saints,Steelers, pay their QB'S, the most important player on your roster, the Rams will be the Class of that Division, because they have a future with Sam Bradford, and the Cards again will be Doormats.

Derek Anderson will be out of the league in a few more weeks anyways.  What did the reporter have to lose in asking that question?  The Cards looked terrible last night and Anderson got caught "cashing the proverbial check."  If I am Larry Fitzgerald, I'm looking to get on the first bus out of town when the season is over.

I say all of this as a life-long Cards fan from the early 70's.

"If  you're the starting QB" is what I meant to say.

I'm done.

If  of a team you're the starting qb & your team is losing badly to a bad team, you shouldn't be laughing in the first place. Derek Anderson brought this humiliation on himslf.
I guess it's better than crying, but not by much.

I'm amazed at the blog comments about this incident. First of all, all sports press conferences are pathetic. I don't know where exactly the market is for these quotes from athletes yabbering on and on about what all of us just saw.
The reporter in this case was doing something a little more probing than the usual, "What were you thinking when you saw that opening?" or my favorite, "How do you think the team looked tonight?" kind of silly throwaway question.
All sports talk shows are for people who must have wayyyyy too much time on their hands, but if you're going to waste time on these things, I think a good question just might be, "why are you are the bench grinning and laughing when your team is getting beaten pretty badly on national TV?" Hey, I understand that no one should be trying to commit hari-kari over a game, but a little dignity in losing is not too much to ask for, is it?
If you're Arizona's coach and you turned around and saw that exchange, you don't think it would have ticked you off? A simple answer would have been to say, "you know, the camera can catch you at different times in the wring context. I take my job very seriously and I work very hard on my game. I was talking to a fellow player and we shared a light-hearted moment. That happens, even during the course of a bad night."
If you are a professional athlete, you should be able to handle the spotlight of these types of things. In my opinion, Anderson went off on the reporter because he was embarrased of his own behavior and didn't want to own up to it.

Sometimes things are funny, no matter where you are. How long is do the players have to wait to laugh at something. I know its there job, but it is still just a game. Somers did what he did just to get the reaction he did, but look I just typed his name!

Ok number one you didnt see the rebirth if if Westbrook! He ran through a paper thin defense that didnt even show up tp the game! Number 2 Derek Anderson IS not even close to the best player on that team! He is a terrible quarterback! The Cardinals deserve what they get for not giving Lienart a chance! Anderson already had his chances with the Browns and he blew it bigtime! Back to Westbrook i'm will to wager he doesnt run for 100 for the entire rest of season! He didnt have anyone tackling him on defense! He did absolutely npthing special last night !

The question asked by the reporter was about the kind of question you'd expect out of a five-year old. When Anderson told him it was none of his business, and he continued asking him the same useless question it reminded me of the "I know you are but what am I?" retorts everyone says when they are children. I mean seriously this guy gets a free press conference pass, gets paid for it, and the most "RELEVANT" question he could come with was that? Obsurd! Who cares what they were laughing about? He's already dealing with enough while watching his team get destroyed on the field, so let it go.
