It’s been a little weird watching a Lions game this season and not seeing Jason Hanson jogging onto the field to kick. Hanson has been with the club since 1992.

Get used to the weirdness, though. Per multiple media outlets, the Lions are set to place the 40-year-old on Injured Reserve (leg). Dave Rayner will handle the kicking duties for the remainder of the season.

There’s an unfortunate fun (or unfun) fact with Hanson’s injury: he has played 295 games with the Lions. Bruce Matthews holds the record for most games played with one franchise (Oilers/Titans). Matthews’ mark? 296.

It’s not known whether Hanson will get a chance to surpass Matthews. When middle-aged players end the season on IR, they generally aren’t brought back the following year. It’s doubtful the Lions know what to do with Hanson at this point.

Hanson and Sanders are apples and oranges. Not even going to respond to that, however, Jason Hanson's off-field and locker room value is almost as great as his on field performance. This town loves the man. Raynor has filled in well in Hanson's absence but if Hanson wants to and is able to return, he'll be back. Yes, we are still losing games. Yes, we still have holes to fill but we are much better then our record. We are close to finally being a real playoff contender and I think Hanson wants to be a part of that. He's paid his dues just as we fans have, why would he walk away now? And if Jason Hanson can walk, he can kick. He's money.

You are seriously saying a kicker is better than Barry Sanders?  Do yourself a favor and NEVER watch another football game as long as you live.

Nope. I was serious. He is by far the all time leading scorer for the Lions. Not bad for "not a real football player".

He single handedly(footedly) won too many games for them than we could count. He is the only thing "clutch" the franchise has ever seen.

Now I love Barry Sanders, and to me, he's the greatest running back of all time, but I guarantee you if William Clay Ford had to choose between the the two, he would pick Hanson every time.

"Jason Hanson = The Greatest Detroit Lion of all time. Period."

I can only hope this is sarcasm.  Just in case, I'll offer up two points that will prove he's not the greatest Lion ever.  Point 1: Barry Sanders.  Point 2: Jason Hanson is a kicker, and therefore, not a real football player.

Detriot is one of my teams when i play a football games and Hanson has been in every one of them lol. How many early/mid 90s players are still playing now? can't be too many i would imagine.
