Simms has Derek Anderson's back

Cardinals QB Derek Anderson has been put through the wringer this week.

Most of it is his fault after he made himself an Internet sensation with his response to perfectly fair questions from an Arizona Republic reporter about his sideline demeanor while Arizona was taking a pounding vs. San Francisco on Monday Night Football (he and Deuce Latui were spotted laughing on the bench).

But CBS’ own Phil Simms has taken the side of Anderson.

“Wow, what an injustice to Derek Anderson,” Simms said this week. “He should be upset about it. Players make a lot of faces when they’re in games. Now we have to go by the manual how you’re supposed to have a face during the game?  Open it up and it says when you lose be sure you do nothing but have a sad face. To stand on the sidelines and be questioned because maybe there was a hint of a smile on your face when you were losing?

“It can happen for a lot of reasons. Did I ever smile on the sidelines when we were losing? I’m sure I did. I probably looked at one of my teammates and went, ‘Wow, I can’t believe after all the work we’ve done we’ve got ourselves in this situation.’ It can be a smirk or a smile. There could be a thousand reasons for it. It’s amazing. Fans get upset if a player acts normal after a loss. How could you be acting that way after you just lost? Hey, you work hard, you do your job, you accept it, and you go back to work and hope you can do something about it and change it.”

Sure, the “Hey, my teammates were just trying to cheer me up during a difficult time” defense would have been perfectly valid if that’s what Anderson had said in the postgame presser. Instead, he went berserk and made this a much bigger story than it needed to be. Which, after apologizing Wednesday, he seemed to realize.

Simms has Derek Anderson's back

THIS REPORTER NEEDS TO FOCUS ON WHAT WENT ON DURING THE GAMES WITH THE LITTLE WHIMP ROMO. EVERY TIME HE PLAYED BAD THERE WAS AN EXCUSE. HE SMILES CONSTANTLY AND PLAYS LIKE A IDIOT. IF YOU WATCH HALF THE QUARTER BACKS THEY JOKE ON AND OFF THE FIELD. THAT IS THE WAY SOME COPE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A PERSONAL INTERVIEW WITH HIM, OH I FORGET HE ISN'T A IMPORTANT ENOUGH FIGURE TO RATE AN INTERVIEW.
YOU MIGHT LOSE YOUR TEMPER A LITTLE IF SOME ONE STARTS BELITTLEING YOU ON NATIONAL TV. FOCUS ON THE GAME OR HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN THE PURPOSE OF INTERVIEWING THE PLAYERS

Simms has Derek Anderson's back

Phil Simms is a terrible analyst and the fact that he is defending Anderson's tirade shows how unqualified he is as a sports analyst. I would like to hear what Steve Young, Dan Marino, Troy Aikman, Kurt Warner and Jim Kelly have to say about this. I am surprised that Phillip Rivers did not speak up for Anderson since he once also laughed like an idiot on the sidelines while his team was getting crushed by the opposition. So is Phil Simms saying that it is OK for everyone to use profanity when they don't do a good job in life. Simms should have said that although he can understand Anderson's frustration Anderson was out of line for being rude and using profanity. I saw the press conference at home and I was scared. Anderson looked like a crazed maniac pumped full of steroids. If Anderson had a weapon I am 100% certain that he would have attacked the reporter who asked him the question and Anderson would probably not stop until he had gotten his frustrations out on everyone in the room. Anderson should know better. He has played on some very bad Cleveland teams so one would think that he knows how to deal with losing. Apparently, Anderson is nothing but a cry baby who whines and cries when things do not go as planned. Anderson said that he worked hard and practiced alot but was upset that he and his team still got pawned by the 49ers. It's call proper preparation. It doesn't matter if someone spends all their time preparing and practicing if they don't prepare and practice appropriately. When the 49ers lost to Tampa Bay by 21-0 Singletary said that the 49ers didn't do a good job practicing. No kidding! What he should have said was that he and his coaches did not prepare the players well. The struggling Tampa Bay team were desperate and they saw their game against the 49ers as their "Super Bowl" and planned accordingly. Although Tampa Bay was near the bottom in pass coverage, run defense and offense they really outplayed the 49ers who are not much better than Tampa Bay. Yes, the 49ers have a worst record than Tampa Bay, but did Tampa Bay manage to hang tough against New Orleans like the 49ers did? No, not even close. Tampa Bay got blasted by New Orleans. I'm not even going to address the fact that Derek Anderson is such a terrible QB that he would have trouble starting on a division 2 college football team. But I must say that although he and Alex Smith both are sporting the "Mountain Mike" lumberjack look, Alex Smith never blew a gasket when Mike Nolan said that Alex Smith was lying when Smith told the media that he has an injured shoulder. Nolan said that Smith does not have an injured should which meant that Smith was making excuses for his poor play. But we later learn that Smith was playing with a broken wing and it is amazing that Smith's should had not fallen off.
Simms said "Now we have to go by the manual how you’re supposed to have a face during the game?  Open it up and it says when you lose be sure you do nothing but have a sad face. To stand on the sidelines and be questioned because maybe there was a hint of a smile on your face when you were losing?" From his poor grammar I am surmising that he never graduated from college or passed the writing skills test. He is a QB. He is not suppose to be stupid or sound like he is.

Josh Katzowitz,

If you think that those were "
perfectly fair questions from an Arizona Republic reporter", then you're a wetter & nastier used douche bag than I was lead to believe. I might add you're just as ignorant as that reporter as well. Stop writing your mundane rhetoric on our sports blogs. You are not worthy! As much as I can't stand Phil Simms (or his son), he's right on this one.
