Urban Meyer to the Denver Broncos? Maybe?

On Wednesday, the Florida Gators announced that Urban Meyer stepped down as head coach of the Florida Gators. Needless to say, his tenure there was spectacular -- two national titles and an unbelievable run with Tim Tebow under center.

Which brings us to the NFL side of things, since the Denver Broncos, the team that happens to have Tebow under contract, are currently seeking a full-time coach who can restore their franchise to glory after they canned Josh McDaniels on Monday.

This is obviously pure speculation, because there are tons of reasons it wouldn't make sense. Namely, college coaches typically fail in the NFL. Additionally, Meyer, for all of his success in the college ranks, has no experience in the NFL, which certainly plays against the notion that the Broncos would want to hire a coach with experience reviving a program.

On the other hand, having Tebow on the roster makes for an unpleasant scenario for most coaches -- it seems pretty likely that other executives would have used that 25th overall pick in 2010 differently. Meyer, presumably, would have no problem convincing himself that he could help Tebow succeed at the next level (even if logic says that Tebow can't be a great NFL quarterback).

Next, take a look at the success the Broncos have had this year, which has come only offensively: it's primarily based on McDaniels system allowing Kyle Orton and a rag-tag-but-talented group of wide receivers to succeed. Meyer could easily believe that his own system could achieve the same success.

Would Meyer demand personnel control in Denver? Likely not, given this would be his first run in the NFL as a head coach, and that could be one of the sticking points for Denver going forward, because of McDaniels' inability to properly manage personnel.

There's no obvious John Elway/Pat Bowlen/Joe Ellis connection here, so the speculation for putting Urban Meyer as the new head coach of the Denver Broncos revolves entirely around the fact that less than 48 hours after Tim Tebow's boss was fired, Meyer suddenly (and quite unexpectedly) resigned from his post at Florida.

This was his second resignation, so it's as if it wasn't some sort of possibility of him leaving the Gators. And -- as my college colleague Adam Jacobi wrote -- if Meyer's in bad shape health-wise (again) it seems pretty unlikely that he would leave for an NFL job.

But the timing of the moves are begging for some speculation as to whether or not Meyer could succumb to the lure of coaching Tebow again.

Urban Meyer to the Denver Broncos? Maybe?

I want somebody with experience to take over my Broncos as McDaniels took everything we had going and pissed it away and forgot to wipe the seat on the way out. Trade Hillis for Quinn, trade a 1st round pick for Alphonso Smith, get rid of Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, Tim Tebow with a 1st round draft pick. I could do better in Madden.

We need a Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher. Going with youth didn't work with McDaniels, and it didn't work for Obama either (Wouldn't it be nice if he just resigned too?)

Urban Meyer to the Denver Broncos? Maybe?

Urban Meyer going to the Broncos would be a horrible mistake. Meyer is a college coach, period. He runs a spread offense which has been proven to not work at the NFL level. The only good that this move would do is bring a lot of hype to the Broncos organization because Tim Tebow would be reunited with Meyer and people would assume that the two would work the same miracles that they did when they were together at the University of Florida. While it would sell tickets they would have a worse season under Meyer next year then under Josh McDaniels this year.

DoctorMonkey, funny post.  If I was a fan of those teams, I would wish the same thing.  He is not an NFL coach and quit last year because of stress problems.  If he thinks the college ranks are stressful, then he would never last in the NFL.  PLus, he has never held an NFL job before.  Most college coaches flunk in the NFL or any pro league for that matter.  And although they won in college together, the NFL is not college and Tim Tebow will never achieve what he did in college because he is not an NFL caliber quarterback.  The selection to choose him was the biggest mistake in the draft.  That was a waste of a first round pick.  Having his college coach is not going to magically make Tebow into a pro QB.  His style of play is not suited for the NFL where you actually have to be a pocket passer.  Anyone with common sense knows Tebow is not cut to be an elite QB.  He will be a career backup if he wants to play QB and would only be used in a wildcat formation.  To play everyday, he would need to play fullback or wide receiver (he is not fast enough), so his only option is a fullback.  I do not believe the Broncos will make the same mistake hiring a coach without NFL head coaching experience because we all know how McCheater turned out.  While Meyer may not demand control of personnel decisions (which is a good thing), his personal problems off the field and the fact he is not an NFL guy are the reasons to stay away.

Man, y'all gotta simmer down on the hate here, haha. I said repeatedly it was speculation and it probably doesn't work, but it's absolutely something that has to be addressed, right?? Thanks for reading though, of course.

Too Much Free SEC money, and the opportunity to always be at the top of the conference  to walk away from THAT to become the Denver Bronco Coach. The Broncos dont have a ton of great starters and no depth on the field at all.

Urban Meyer to the Denver Broncos? Maybe?

I simply can't see Urban Meyer being a head coach in the NFL.  He can't (in the NFL) rely on having a team of better athletes like he could at the college level.  If he's stepping down to focus on his family, or his health, than good for him.  That's a worthy reason.  If he's going to try his luck in the NFL, good luck, but I don't see him having much sucess there.

If he's doing this to help Tim Tebow be a sucessful NFL quarterback, then good luck there too.  But I think he'd have a better chance if he was a quarterback in his playing days.

I'd hire lesley fraiser or a defensive coach. at least then you don't have to worry about replacing your coordinator every year. thats the big issue
