Report: Chiefs ink Charles to 5-year extension

Despite only finding the end zone four times in 2010 (three rushing) and splitting carries with Thomas Jones, Jamaal Charles has been one of the most productive backs in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs clearly recognize that, and they've given Charles a five-year extension worth $32.5 million with $13 million guaranteed.

That's according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who also reports that the third-year back out of Texas will get $13 million in guaranteed money.

Charles leads the NFL with 6.2 yards per carry and is third in rushing with 1,137 yards on the season. In addition, he's caught 34 passes for 379 yards en route to becoming one of the most dangerous backfield threats for the top-rushing team in the NFL.

What will be interesting is whether or not Chiefs look to pair him with another young bruiser in the future -- Todd Haley's decision to keep the carries between Charles and Jones even this season (182 and 187, respectively) angered Charles' fantasy owners at first, but it's proven to keep both backs fresh and allow for maximum productivity in 2010.

Regardless though, Charles is now getting fairly compensated for his production and the Chiefs have the cornerstone of a dangerous rushing attack locked up for the foreseeable future.

You got that backwards pal. Charles is the speedster, Jones is the one that wears the defenses down. Watch football instead of reading about it and maybe you'll get your facts straight.

he doesn't get the most carries but he runs hard.  He batters defenses and allows the quicker jones to break free.  Great one two punch and a good move by kc keeping him around.

Great move by KC. If haley keeps play'n him like he's a little girl, he could be the team running back for the next 5 years maybe longer. Go charles go!

Maybe not the best RB, but quite possibly the most dangerous.    If he reaches 200 carries and averages over 6ypc....there isn't really anything hilarious about that.

182 carries substantial? 182 carries into 13 weeks is 14 carries a game.. substantial?  jim brown had 6.4ypc with 291 attempt.. you sir look to be the idiot.  and i think jones signed a contract longer then one year as well. u compared him to a ferrari? 350k for one of those vs 1.7 a year for charles? sorry but im driving that car everyday and he is playing everyday im far from a moron and im far from wealthy. if u know anything about sports or cars its not how u drive its how u maintain.. as long as u keep both in good shape they will both take car of you..  salary caps??? they have almost 30 or more million under the cap..   dude i dont even know why u bother to post things that stupid..

I don't get the San Diego cockiness.  You guys are 6-6 and got dominated by the Raiders last week. Croyle is every bit as good as weak Jason Campbell. You guys are very lucky that Cassel's appendix decided to give him problems, otherwise you'd be faced with elimination this weekend. Now with Croyle starting you have some hope. But the game is by no means gimmie since Rivers is a one man show and if the passing game falter's you are screwed.
