Grossman to start over McNabb Sunday

The Redskins didn’t wait until the final two minutes of a close game to throw their “franchise quarterback” under the bus this week: according to Kelli Johnson of Comcast Sports Net, Rex Grossman is getting the starting nod over Donovan McNabb against the Cowboys.
R. Grossman (US Presswire)
Grossman and McNabb have been splitting the first team reps in practice the past two weeks or so. It is believed that Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan thinks Grossman has a better grasp of the system (Grossman played for Shanahan in Houston last season).

For the Redskins, this is a potential nightmare that could make the Haynesworth fiasco look trivial in comparison. Johnson reports that several players are “extremely upset” and that the locker room is divided. Jason La Canfora of NFL.com says many players believe Kyle Shanahan (and, one would assume, Mike Shanahan, as well) has lost credibility because he is using McNabb as a scapegoat. The Redskins offense ranks 27th in scoring.

In November, McNabb signed what was believed to be a long-term megadeal with the Redskins. However, the media later discovered that Washington would be on the hook for just $3.75 million if McNabb was cut after the 2010 season. That scenario now looks likely.

Replacing any quarterback with the turnover-prone Grossman is a move that speaks volumes about the quarterback being replaced. In other words, the Skins aren’t turning to Grossman because they like his potential; they’re turning to Grossman because they no longer respect McNabb’s game.

The backlash from this move, particularly if Grossman struggles, is going to be monumental. Word is Mike Shanahan was utterly ill-prepared to face the scrutiny after benching McNabb against Detroit. Shanahan is not ill-prepared this time. He wouldn’t open Pandora’s box if he thought McNabb was going to be in Washington next season.

For McNabb, whose 77.5 passer rating ranks 25th in the NFL, the discussion now focuses on which team will sign him in 2011. One has to figure the Arizona Cardinals will be at the forefront of that discussion.

This is more a statement about the Shanahan's ability (or inability) to coach a winning franchise.  He was dumped in Denver for a reason.. and this move is another one of the many Shanahan errors that has solidified this man into the over hyped hall of fame.  Donovan is not the problem.  That OL is a joke, there is little to no run game, no serious deep threat, a slightly above average TE, and a below average Defense lacking playmakers.  In just a few months, Shanahan has managed to lose complete control of this Washington team... which again, speaks volumns about him.  This team is old, slow, bad up front on both sides of the ball, and no playmakers on offense for Donovan or anyone to work with.  Shanahan has 1 year left before Snyder realizes his mistake in hiring such an alful head coach.

You don't want Locker. Very inaccurate and has no head. Completely overrated. Blessed with all the physical tools, but suffered under shoddy coaching under Willingham and Sarkisian.

McNabb is past his best football but wake up. No one will do well on this team with short wide receivers and an unstable running game (and staff). If the team is serious about wanting to improve, keep McNabb, draft a qb (plenty in next years draft) and 2 stud receivers. Santana Moss as your best reciever for the last what, decade, is not going to cut it, anywhere.

"Is a nice person but a very disappointing and a highly inaccurate thrower who is off target most when the game is on the line. "

That's funny when your team is QBed by Jay Cutler.

F this.  I'm a life long Redskins fan, but I will not watch the game this Sunday if McNabb is benched.  And if McNabb is a Cardinal next season, I'm dumping the Skins for Arizona!

just courious....how do you think we will get jake locker? not to trade down for........carolina will get himno they wont, Carolina will either get Andrew Luck or draft a reciever, Locker has lost alot of draft stock by staying in school, the Redskins will likely have a top 10 pick which means, Carolina gets Luck, some team will get Mallett or Newton and we get Locker.

I was in favor of McNabb over Campbell because Cambell won less than one in three games decided by one score.
yep and i was too and still am in favor of it. Campbell couldnt beat the Chargers backups when in Washington, now i KNEW McNabb would not be great, but i also said myself that i hope to find a future replacement for him and it looks like the future starts next year because i could see McNabb cut or traded, likely cut, and then we replace him with a draft pick (likely Locker, as i said 100 times, sorry)

McFlab,

Is a nice person but a very disappointing and a highly inaccurate thrower who is off target most when the game is on the line. McFlab should be replaced since he has been coddled by the media for many years now. Do you think Reid and Shanahan would give up on a QB with talent?  McFlab has been going downhill since he had a panic attack at the end of his only Super Bowl.  TO  was right …. He came to play with a  screw in his leg and Donavon  let the City and Team down not able to run a 2 minute offense.

McFlab has been performing sub par for many years now and he is a mere shadow of himself.  At this point,  I think Grossman is actually a better option and no one should be so alarmed.  Everyone needs to see that in his day McFlab was a very good QB but never a great one and certainly not HOF.

He went to 5 NFC Championships and lost 4 of them. ( 2 at home while being favored ) . His time has passed and he will go to Minnesota or Arizona in 2011 and flounder ….

Why are the same people that piled on the Redskins for trading for McNabb now piling on the Redskins for benching him? It is clear that the Eagles didn't believe in him and he has not given the Redskins any reason to believe in him. The fact is that as bad as the Reskins are they are are only a few plays away from being in the playoff hunt. I was in favor of McNabb over Campbell because Cambell won less than one in three games decided by one score.  I thought McNabb could make that one or two game-on-the-line play difference. He hasn't.
