Portis says Redskins are playing 'scared'

Despite the fact he’s on the IR list and done playing for the season, Redskins RB Clinton Portis still continues to check in with 106.7 The Fan's The Mike Wise Show With Holden Kushner for his weekly segment.

Usually, he says something somewhat controversial, and today was no exception.

Portis Via the Washington Post, Portis said that without Donovan McNabb in the lineup, the Redskins are playing “scared.” That’s because, as Portis puts it, players see the benching of McNabb and realize if it can happen to him, it can happen to them as well.

"In the locker room, I think that (the McNabb benching) would scare a lot of guys," Portis said. "That Donovan McNabb, who has done so much in the NFL, gets benched. I think it becomes a thing in the locker room like, 'Man, if they bench Donovan, anybody can be benched. Or am I next, or what's next?' And I think guys start playing for safety.

"That's really been a big part of the problem around here. People start playing for safety. So it's like, 'I gotta play safe and sound, instead of going out on the limb and making plays.' It's like, 'How do you do what they say? I don't want to be outside the box. I want to do everything I possibly could to save myself.' Instead of just laying on the line. ... If they done with you, it ain't much you can do."

Portis says Redskins are playing 'scared'

Well Portis, you don't need to worry.  You will not be in a Redskins uniform next year.

Seriously Portis should've been out of Football a long time ago. This guy is a waste of space who has done nothing to help his team win anything since he left Denver. If It takes a player being benched because he's not performing the way he's suppose to, to make you play then you shouldn't be in Football. Go back to college and get a degree so that you can go on to a better job. Oh I'm sorry I forgot, some of these players are to stupid to pick up a book and football is there only way of getting money. How about shutting the hell up and go out there and play your heart out the way you're suppose to. That's why I think I'm going to start watching college Football, so much more better to see players playing the game cause they want to win.

Portis says Redskins are playing 'scared'

This guy talks a big game but really hasn't proven that much other than he always has a lot of unintelligent things to say. People are scared because they're afraid of getting benched so they start playing for safety? How about going out there and doing your job and playing hard and then you don't have to worry about getting benched. It's not like D-Mac got benched for playing well. It's a pretty simple concept. Play well and you stay in the game to help your team win and if you play badly, you ride the pine. Is this a new concept? This guy really is an IDIOT! Can't wait for Portis to be gone from the NFL...

on the money mac7strong!  I have respected Mcnabb from afar, even as a hated Eagle, for many years...primarily how he carries himself on and off the field. I liked the trade at the time, but he has performed poorly...not having an offensive line or weapons around him are legitimate concerns but in the NFL, they are just plain excuses!!  If you believe most of the pundits out there, Grossman is the worst QB in the NFL but he was much sharper running the offense last week and put up 4 TDs.  He made several big mistakes, but Shanny needs to evaluate him before the off season.  Way too many haters when it comes to the Redskins.   We
demanded change from the organization and they delivered...we need to give Allen and Shanny more than 14 games to fix this thing.  We need to stay the course with these guys, they will deliver us a winner!  Portis actually backed into the truth...everyone should be scared for their jobs because Shanny demands perfection and commitment to team and until we have 53 guys that are united, we won't win consistently!  This will be a great off season, barring a CBA nightmare!!

Portis says Redskins are playing 'scared'

I can kind of agree with Portis. Football is alot of hitting, running, and strategy. But there is alot of mental things that go on in the game too. In the locker room so many issues come up that the fans dont know NOTHING about. There will always be some player not liking another player for an off the field issue and things like that. The team and the media try to do their best to cover it up to the fans, but we usually have some type of hint what's going on.

Right on!! I think Shanahan is on track with what he is doing with team. It is time to get rid of all the dead weight. You have to be accountable on the game and practice fields. For years we have heard that Donovan is not a practice player, and it shows on the game field. Yet the press wants to unload on the Redskin coaching staff for benching him. Was it really disrespectful??? Look at the stats! If Chris Bermann and his peers (clowns mostly - Keyshawn is a joke) performing in the lower 20% percentile as Donovan has, would he keep his job? I doubt it. From the time McNabb was pulled in the Detroit game, we all knew he wasn't untouchable. This day was a longtime coming. And he knew it too. The coaching staff has been telling him for months that he needs to 'walk the walk'. And just because he WAS a ProBowler, does not mean that he IS a ProBowler. Come on man, he is ranked 26 out 32 QB's. He has had so many overthrown and under thrown passes each game, it's ridiculous. Yes, the offensive line is weak, to say the least. But you know that going in to the game. And you have to adjust to it. Sacks and all. BTW - he got sacked nearly as much with Philly last year too. Do you really think Andy Ried, the genius, would send a current ProBowl QB to a rival team, if it would hurt his team?
Is Rex the answer. No, I surely doubt it. But he did put up (4) TD's, which we haven't done all year.

Mcnabb was benched because continuing to allow him to take snaps may obligate the Redskins to give the Eagles a 3rd round pick instead of a 4th for 2011.  Mcnabb has disappointed and the Skins have clearly decided to move on-- why cost the team even more?

Sure, Shannahan says he doesn't know if Mcnabb will be back, but that is just sales talk...he is hoping to move Mcnabb for a late round pick or two in the offseason. There isn't a player in the locker room that does not understand what is going on.  If they are playing safe, it is because they realize the housecleaning is coming next Mcnabb, no Portis, no Moss.  The offense will be rebuilt and the defense will continue to be rebuilt. This is not Shannahan's team yet, this will be his first complete off-season.
