A lot of speculation bubbled up last week that Bill Cowher (who happens to work for CBS' Sports) had a "wish list" of teams he wanted to coach.

The three teams on the list -- the Giants, Dolphins and Texans -- all have currently-employed coaches, and that fueled more speculation as to why Cowher (or someone associated with him) would leak the info with those teams' respective coaches clinging to their gigs.

On Sunday, Cowher addressed the issue at the start of The NFL Today, stating that he was "insulted" by the report.

"I have too much respect for the profession, I know how hard it is," Cowher said. "I don't wish for anyone to be fired. And for someone to insinuate that I'm doing that right now is disrespectful to them and I'm insulted by it.

I would not do that to the profession and I hope every one of these coaches has an opportunity to come back. I'm not naive enough to say there won't be changes at the end of the year and I'll address that at the end of the year."

Cowher also pointed out that he's got "a pretty good team" with CBS who happens to be heading to the playoffs before repeating the point that he was insulted by the report.

What made the "leaked list" so surprising is that it doesn't fit Cowher's M.O. in the first place -- he'll have plenty of opportunities to coach teams in the NFL and doesn't likely need to let a team with a soon-to-be-fired head coach know in advance that he's interested.

"...especially Shannahan, what has he done since Elway left?. "

Will someone with a brain please tell me exactly how many Super Bowls Dan Reeves won WITH Elway?

How many Super Bowls did Wade Phillips win with Elway?

I agree with you that they are both over rated, especially Shannahan, what has he done since Elway left?. NOTHING! Cowher is a good average NFL coach at best.

Vegas Dave - Thanks. I have been a Steelers fan for pretty long - since at least 1970 but even before (I had a Dick Shiner football card). You make a great point about former Steelers who went on to other teams yet regard the Steelers as "their" team. I also like your comments about center - we only had four starting centers from 1964 to 2004 - that is quite a run Mansfield, Webster, Dawson, Hartings). I think Maurice Pouncey is the real deal and agree with the other poster who hopes we land his brother in the next draft.

As for consistent team success, to me it takes more than a great coach. It takes a great organization including managment and ownership. Bill Cowher was a great coach for the Steelers and was a perfect fit. He will need the right organization to succeed again. In today's NFL, a bad coach can lose games and ruin a good team; a good coach undertstands he needs help and does nmot nano-manage every aspect of the game.

I believe that Cowher understands this and will be selective about which offer to accept. I hope he has not gotten pwer hungry and tries to be a coach/GM ala Joe Gibbs II. That formula does not work.

Cowher won with K. Stewart and T. Maddox as well.  He is a great coach, but struggled to get past the AFCC.  Now he is ready to comeback, I am interested to see who his preferances are for assistant coaches.

Pouncey is great.  Not being a "skill" player like QB hurts his chances for ROY.  I hope the Steelers manage to get his brother drafted in April.

As a die hard 49er fan since John Brodie - I would love to see Gruden or Cowher take over this young & fairly talented team.

Personally, I would not be surprised to the Cowher coaching for the 49ers. Especially after the firing of Mike Singletary. Unless you subscribe to to the theory of bringing back former alumni of Bill Walsh's coaching tree, in which case that might be John Gruden?!
