A lot of speculation bubbled up last week that Bill Cowher (who happens to work for CBS' Sports) had a "wish list" of teams he wanted to coach.

The three teams on the list -- the Giants, Dolphins and Texans -- all have currently-employed coaches, and that fueled more speculation as to why Cowher (or someone associated with him) would leak the info with those teams' respective coaches clinging to their gigs.

On Sunday, Cowher addressed the issue at the start of The NFL Today, stating that he was "insulted" by the report.

"I have too much respect for the profession, I know how hard it is," Cowher said. "I don't wish for anyone to be fired. And for someone to insinuate that I'm doing that right now is disrespectful to them and I'm insulted by it.

I would not do that to the profession and I hope every one of these coaches has an opportunity to come back. I'm not naive enough to say there won't be changes at the end of the year and I'll address that at the end of the year."

Cowher also pointed out that he's got "a pretty good team" with CBS who happens to be heading to the playoffs before repeating the point that he was insulted by the report.

What made the "leaked list" so surprising is that it doesn't fit Cowher's M.O. in the first place -- he'll have plenty of opportunities to coach teams in the NFL and doesn't likely need to let a team with a soon-to-be-fired head coach know in advance that he's interested.

Cowher 'insulted' by 'disrespectful' coach rumors

In years past, speculation about Cowher's desire to coach again was just that - speculation.  With a source, albeit an unidentified one, behind this year's speculation, I have no doubt that Coach Cowher will be coaching next year.  He could have put an end to it by stating "I never said I was interested in those thee jobs or any other job."  He didn't say that because the report of the list is likely accurate.  I find it interesting that he is such a hot commodity as a coach even though he will go almost 5 years between games coached.  I can't think of a big name coach that has taken time off like that and returned to have any real success.  Plus with the name, money and teams mentioned, the only acceptable result would be a Super Bowl appearance.  I am not sure he will have the edge required to lead a team to those heights at this point.

I hate the Steelers as much as the next guy but to you have to be kidding if you say you'd rather not have him as your coach.  Really?  Marvin Lewis is any better?  Hate the guy for taking Steelers to playoffs and SuperBowl but dont say he sucked as a coach when he owned your team for about a decade and a half.  By the way, i know this article didnt mention it but what about Dallas?

I wish he would have disrespected Mangini and said he wants to coach the Browns.  They should have went after him last year to start things new with Holmgren and Cowher.

The media does not make up stories. What does happen -- often -- is that people say things that they think are just part of a conversation and then are horrified to see them in print or on the air. They backpedal and leave the reporter hanging. In this case, my guess is that Cowher has had some very strong negative reaction and is covering his butt because of something he did say but didn't expect was going to be reported. Why someone with his experience would make that kind of mistake is beyond me, but it happens all the time, with even more experienced people.
