A lot of speculation bubbled up last week that Bill Cowher (who happens to work for CBS' Sports) had a "wish list" of teams he wanted to coach.

The three teams on the list -- the Giants, Dolphins and Texans -- all have currently-employed coaches, and that fueled more speculation as to why Cowher (or someone associated with him) would leak the info with those teams' respective coaches clinging to their gigs.

On Sunday, Cowher addressed the issue at the start of The NFL Today, stating that he was "insulted" by the report.

"I have too much respect for the profession, I know how hard it is," Cowher said. "I don't wish for anyone to be fired. And for someone to insinuate that I'm doing that right now is disrespectful to them and I'm insulted by it.

I would not do that to the profession and I hope every one of these coaches has an opportunity to come back. I'm not naive enough to say there won't be changes at the end of the year and I'll address that at the end of the year."

Cowher also pointed out that he's got "a pretty good team" with CBS who happens to be heading to the playoffs before repeating the point that he was insulted by the report.

What made the "leaked list" so surprising is that it doesn't fit Cowher's M.O. in the first place -- he'll have plenty of opportunities to coach teams in the NFL and doesn't likely need to let a team with a soon-to-be-fired head coach know in advance that he's interested.

Cowher 'insulted' by 'disrespectful' coach rumors

The problem is not just the "tabloid" sources of news, it's the mainstream sources as well. With 24 hour coverage of everything, you eventually have to speculate and talk about every rumor you hear to fill the void. Unfortunately, we are too accepting of gossip, slander, and libel. We think we know what everyone else is thinking and what their motives are. We make up the truth instead of seeking the truth. It is totally absurd for us to speculate about when Cowher should have addressed this issue or what he should have said when he did speak about it. Only God is omniscient, we should stop acting like we are. How would you like it if every time you said something it was dissected and interpreted according to everyone else's predetermined ideas.

Cowher 'insulted' by 'disrespectful' coach rumors

McQ: We agree on a couple of things: 1) Cowher is a standup guy.  2) If he finds that whoever was responsible for this issue is associated with him in any way, he should terminate that relationship.

It seems that our "take" on the matter differs only in the fact that I place blame solidly on the media for extending the story and forcing Bill to respond, while you blame Cowher for not debunking it immediately. It's cool. We agree on more than we don't, and to each their own.

Thanks for arguing your point without resorting to insults or personal references. That's all-to-rare around here.

Cowher 'insulted' by 'disrespectful' coach rumors

He absolutely could have.  The day this came out Cowher could have said 'I obviously don't want anyone to get fired just so I can have a job.'  Or, if he had nothing to do with the list he could have said 'I didn't have anything to do with that.'  The fact is he DOESN'T have his pick of coaching jobs; he has his pick of OPEN coaching jobs.  This was either a not-so-subtle attempt by Cowher of trying to open select jobs (which is unlikely, I agree.  Cowher is a stand-up guy.) or it was someone else.  If it was someone else, Cowher should have put an end to it, at least from his end, immediatey.  The media could pick away, but Cowher should have said something right away.  To suddenly seem insulted now seems disingenuous.  Cowher knows how the media works and he let it work FOR him this time.

Cowher 'insulted' by 'disrespectful' coach rumors

@McQ: Who asked "why did it take him a week to address the matter?"

For several reasons: Cowher can't possibly address every mention in the media that speculates on his job future. Some of us who follow this stuff concluded almost immediately that it was highly unlikely that Cowher would say such a thing. After all, it isn't any secret that Bill can have his pick of head coaching jobs; he doesn't need to campaign for any.

But the media kept picking at the "leak", keeping the story alive for several days until Cowher had no choice but to make his postion clear.

I'm far more interested in who propagated such drivel. Somebody had an axe to grind; I'd like to know who... and why.

Cowher 'insulted' by 'disrespectful' coach rumors

Really? If he's so 'insulted' by the rumors why did it take him a week to address the matter? He could have come out the day the list leaked and said this. Instead. he let the story fester for a while.
