Following the 49ers' loss to the St. Louis Rams (an ugly 25-17 elimination party), Jed York didn't exactly endorse his head coach, and it seemed likely that Mike Singletary would be fired.

York didn't wait to think about his decision, though, and he asked Singletary to resign following the loss. Singletary refused, however, and York was forced to fire him and replace him with Jim Tomsula, the Niners defensive line coach.

"I want to thank Mike Singletary for the passion and effort that he brought to this organization," York said in a statement. "He is a tremendous person for whom I will always have great respect."

Singletary was also grateful in a statement.

"One of the greatest experiences of my life was having the opportunity to coach the San Francisco 49ers," Singletary said. "What made it so special were the players. They were some of the most outstanding men I have ever been around in my life. The coaches were truly professionals. I wish the 49ers nothing but the best."

One of those coaches, Tomsula, has his work cut out for him.

Unfortunately for Tomsula, the interim is only "one week," meaning he won't have much time to justify himself as a possible full-time candidate, although it seems unlikely that he'd nail the gig anyway -- York mentioned that the team isn't afraid to spend money and that means, if the right coach is available, the Niners could be looking at an upgrade.

As for Singletary, he was only kept afloat by the fact that San Fran, who's horribly underperformed this season, resides in the NFC West, where winning five games still gives you a shot at making the playoffs.

His head coaching tenure will be remembered for his many public antics (admitting he dropped his pants, yelling at "Yahoo! commercials," etc and his inability to realize the faults with his own quarterbacks. And that's unfortunate, because Singletary's a hell of a position coach and probably deserves a job with another NFL team in the pretty immediate future.

Chucky? You are clueless. What has done besides take a Tony Dungy built team to win ONE superbowl?! No thanks... He is the most overrated coach out there.

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

The 9ers don't have a franchise QB.  I don't think that is Singletary's fault.  You can't win in the NFL when your best option at QB (Alex Smith) would have a hard time making second-string on most clubs.  Singletary isn't the best coach out there, but he's not the worst either.  Firing him 15 games into the season is weird and an undeserved punch in the gut to an NFL Hall-of-Famer.

I'm not a fan of firing coaches during the season (with the possible exception of Josh McDaniels, whose touch seemed to turn gold to lead at every turn).  I think it sends the wrong signal to the team... losing isn't the coaches fault alone; it's a team activity.  The thought of Troy Smith still being with the team next week and Singletary gone, sort of turns my stomach.

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

As a 49er fan i do not agree that he was an embarassment.  I am happy he is gone, but an embarassment he wasnt.  As far as Harbaugh why go after a guy who has NO NFL HC experience.   Spending the money I hope means they go after Chucky.

Bring back Martz, now that he understands how to balance an offense. He knows a good number of the players and he would add some real excitement to the division again. If he were interviewed immediately after Chicago's last game he might also be able to look into whether there is a QB worth taking in the draft. Personally, I'd try to pick up Orton from Denver and try to send Alex Smith out as starter/depth for a team (KC, Buffalo, Carolina, Tennessee, Indy).

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

Unfortunately for COach Singletary its not 1986, he is not Mike Ditka, and he has to follow in the footsteps of the late bill walsh... he does cast a huge shadow.  Coach Singletary is better served as a coordinator and/or position coach. His intentions are good, but the delivery is a bit archaic in this day and age... his expectations should not change, but you cant act like Iron Mike anymore- you are Samurai Mike, and he retired....
Good luck Niners- restore the pride- even though you took 2 super bowl rings from my beloved and hapless bengals (when they were good and their owner was a legend, not the hapless son of  a legend!)

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

I love the way this douchebag got fired!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! Finally we get rid of a guy that don't know anything about x's and o's.... He was an embarassment to thi shistoric franchise... The way he would stand on that sideline jumping around screaming like a little baby when thigs didn't go his way.... OK, so you don't know anything about strategy, atleast stand on the sidelines and deal with the media with some damn class!!!! Mike Nolan was just as horrible as him as a HC, but at least he showed some damn class on the sidelines....

Mr. York.... Jed..... If you say that money is no object, get out there and hire Coach Harbaugh.... PLEASE!!!!

I guess the 49ers had to wait until they were not able to make the playoffs for certain.  What a joke.  Let him coach the last game.!

Maybe they could've waited one more game but hey thats business I guess right had they not been still in it I think he would of gotten fired back when the Packers beat them. Oh well got to move on  49ers fans you guys have a good team just maybe Singeltary wasn't the guy to bring out the best of these kids.
