NFL reduces fines for 'Big 3' concussion hits

Way back in the middle of October, Brandon Meriweather, James Harrison and Dunta Robinson were all fined a lot of money because of big helmet-to-helmet hits that sparked a national debate about the safety of the NFL.

Those fines, according to Judy Battista of the New York Times, have all been reduced.

Harrison (originally fined $75,000, which nearly "forced" him into retirement) had his fine reduced from $75,000 to $50,000, Meriweather (the headbutt on Todd Heap) had his reduced from $50,000 to $40,000 and Dunta Robinson (who collided with DeSean Jackson) had his reduced from $50,000 to $25,000.

The NFL has since confirmed the reductions.

"We can confirm the outcome of those appeals," the NFL said in a statement. "The appeals officer, Ted Cottrell, reduced Robinson’s fine from $50,000 to $25,000 and Meriweather’s fine from $50,000 to $40,000. Following these decisions, Cottrell took the additional step of reviewing the appeal of James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harrison was fined $75,000 earlier this season for a similar flagrant hit. Cottrell consulted with Commissioner Goodell about reducing Harrison’s fine to $50,000 and the commissioner fully supported the decision."

Cottrell also said, according to the league's statement, that he reduced the fines because of an increased effort by the players to work within the confines of the rules and adjusting their techniques.

Additionally, those fine amounts just make more sense in the scheme of things, especially when you consider how knee-jerk the reaction from the league was to three big hits within a short time span at the time.

With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, and no major incidents with any of the players during the rest of the regular season, a reduction in fines seems like a smart move.

NFL reduces fines for 'Big 3' concussion hits

The best way to deter players from making hits that can lead to concussions is by not allowing players to wear helmets. They don't wear helmets in soccer and it has not been a problem. Defensive football players are not stupid enough to risk making bone jarring hits if they themselves are not protected.  Did you just compare football to soccer? How many times does someone get knocked out in soccer?

Furthermore it's ridiculous that you are ALL so short sighted to see that Fantasy football is a form of gambling....therefore and it HAS BEEN under discussion by the government about making it something that would have to be done within the laws and regulations of regular gambling.  The same discussion has been talked about over online poker gambling AND online sportbook gambling.  Perhaps people from hillbilly states like PA, WV and unintelligent states in the south, shouldn't call out someone who actually has an education and can think rationally.  Clearly dealing with a bunch of 18 year olds on here that clearly can't put 2 and 2 together and realize when they play fantasy football they are in fact gambling and that fantasy football does sure as heck raise the NFL profits.  If it didn't why suddenly do we see all these TV shows about fantasy football, start em sit em BS.  If the NFL didn't care, and wasn't profiting off of it, they wouldn't do it because they don't care about you, they care about your money.  Perhaps I should stop watching football, because clearly those that do, are freaking MORONS

tribe fan ....were you?  Do you really think that there aren't hundreds of thousands of people out there buying NFL Sunday Ticket, just so they can see a San Diego game when they live on the East Coast because they have Philip Rivers as their QB in fantasy football?  Are you really that blind, and short sighted not to see the big picture???  You call me out but really it's you that is clearly unintelligent enough to realize the importance something like fantasy football has on TV ratings and overall popularity of the sport.  Check any box score during a game on CBS, see what EVERY person is talking about.  90% of those people are visiting the CBS site, raising their hit count on their website not because they care about their local team, but they want to see how many catches and for how many yards Larry Fitzgerald has for them.  It's 35-3 but person X wants to still watch a game because he has fantasy implications....need I go on?

" I for 1 would not watch a single game as these games are often UNWATCHABLE."

Suggest you stick to hockey. The Buffalo Bills are unwatchable.

Harrison gets fined 3 times, is made out to look like a dirty plater... and then sent to the Pro Bowl!
"Adolph" Goodell is an idiot and is ruining the NFL.

The Governor of Pennsylvania is right. We are turning into a nation of wusses. Let Harrison play the way he was coached to play.

The league would've been better off if Harrison had retired.  He apparantly has never been taught to tackle properly.

The message board would have been better off if you hadn't commented.  I'm sure he would benefit from your coaching right?

Amen to that. If the NFL wants to fine for hits like that, then they need to stop being two-faced and take Dick Butkus out of the Hall of Fame
