Report: Harbaugh unlikely to take Michigan gig

Sure, it seems like we've been talking a lot about Jim Harbaugh these days, but he's so damn hot right now. And given his refusal to speak about future jobs on Monday night, it sure does seem like he's not hanging around Stanford (at least he's not lying about staying though).

However, the Detroit Free Press now reports that Harbaugh is "highly unlikely" to accept the job at Michigan. That means one of two things: he's either coming back to Stanford or he's heading to one of five NFL teams who desperately covet him.

This would mean, based on what we think we saw last night, that Harbaugh is headed to the NFL. The timing would be perfect, too. A slew of teams --the Broncos (John Elway, Stanford alum, now runs things), the 49ers (Harbaugh and likely GM Baalki share an agent), the Raiders (Harbaugh and Al Davis are boys somehow), and the Panthers (he'd probably get to coach Andrew Luck again) -- all stand out as viable locations for the hottest name in coaching.

That doesn't include the Dolphins -- who sent a team of "ownership scouts" to the Orange Bowl Monday night, the Browns or the Bengals. (Have we covered everyone sufficiently? If not, check out our coaching tracker for all the latest.)

Anyway, look, Andrew Luck should go pro. He can get too much money and the timing's too right. And Harbaugh should follow suit in jumping ship from Stanford, because, really, there's not a whole lot of room to grow outside of a national championship.

If Michigan's out the window, then it's NFL time.

Does this seem like a smoke screen to anyone else?  I still Harbaugh is headed home...ironically enough, Brandon is meeting with RichRod this afternoon...the timing of it is too bizarre.

So how did Nebraska win national championships without being crowned the Big 12 Champion first, longhorn fan?

Uncertainties bring out a slew of people that have no business posting in the first place. Wait until Harbaugh makes a decision and then comment on it. Until then worry about your trailer payments and what beer will be on sale this weekend.

The way the Big Ten is getting beatdown this bowl year  you would think MSU and UM would be thick as thieves.  The entire conference sucks.  Nebraska never won a Big 12 championship and I have big money that says they walk through the door and wins the Big Ten next football season.

Says the guy who's avatar if from a confrence that already lost 2 bowl games to the Big Ten already this year! and his own team didn't even qualify for the bowl season, Irony?

Richrod needs some defensive help.  I can tell you it is hard to recruit anyone when there are so many questions surounding him and his job........I like the offense I like him.  Hire a Defensive coordinator and we are set.

BTW Spartie boys have your fun now.  Don't forget you could beat us 30 times in a row and still be behind in the overall record.  Nice work in Florida too against The Tide!!  Wonder what next year will bring when all those seniors are gone??

mjoeblue You are correct Michigan didnt offer the job to Jim Harbaugh because they didnt have to.  They courted Les Miles and he said no.  Then it was rumored they were going to go after Jim so he came out and public said he wasnt interested in the job and then he took a shot at the Michigan athletic department and their admissions practices.

So no Michigan didnt even have to offer him the job he didnt want it even though Michigan fans wanted him to take it 3 years ago.  Michigan had to give it to Rich Rod because he was the only person interested in taking the job.  Facts are he was going to be offered the job had he not come out and said he wasnt at all interested in the job.

Answer me this about Michigan football.  What was the last decade Michigan football mattered?

1900s.  LMAO.  Since 1950 Michigan has 1 national championship.  Michigan State has 4.  Michigan and its fan base isnt smart enough to realize history is when they last mattered and they arent entitled to good teams, players, or coaches.

I love how you brag about being a Ross business school grad.  About as impressive as beating Indiana in football.  The worst CEO in American business history (Roger Smith) was a Ross graduate for his BA and MBA.  Not to mention the CEO that took GM into bankruptcy (Fritz Henderson) was a Ross business grad.  Michigans Business School seems to have a very bad track record of producing bad leaders that wind up financially killing companies.

WAY TO GO U OF M!  Youre #1.  As in the #1 most overrated school, most overrated football program, and Michigan is #1 at copying every other school.

The Ohio State for years then Michigan decided to call themselves The University of Michigan.  Winged football helmets were first worn by MICHIGAN STATE!  Copied us with that.  Michigan State did the outdoor hockey game so Michigan copied us there.  Michigan State did the beautiful addition to Spartan Stadium with press boxes and luxury seating so again Michigan copied us.

Michigan and its fan base cant come up with an idea of their own and when they do they well.......FAIL!

Hail to the victors SPARTANS

hail to the conquering heroes

hail hail to MSU

THE SPARTANS ARE THE BEST!!!

M GO BLOW!

Harbaugh is a great recruiter and loves his job.  Why leave San Francisco to go to Ann Arbor, Michigan? I like the idea of him staying and building upon his success.  There will be plenty of offers to go to the pros in another three years. Either way, his achievements are good for Stanford, the Pac-10, and the NCAA.
