Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

Al Davis' decision not to pick up Tom Cable's option was not seen well by Oakland P S. Lechler (US Presswire). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

On Tuesday, we told you about the, um, interesting decision by owner Al Davis not to renew the option of Raiders coach Tom Cable, casting him into unemployment instead of rewarding him for the team’s best record in eight seasons and a clean sweep of the AFC West.

Now, the fallout begins.

Oakland punter Shane Lechler told CSN Bay Area (via Pro Football Talk) that the decision was a “huge setback” and intimated that it might cause the team’s best players to not want to play for the organization.

“I’m not so sure this isn’t a terrible decision,” Lechler said.

A few other spicy quotes.

On Hue Jackson, the team’s offensive coordinator who now could be in line for Cable’s old job: “Yes, I do respect (Jackson) … Whether he can call plays and pull off the whole head coaching deal and deal with Al Davis on the side, I don’t know.  That’s a lot on somebody’s plate, so we’ll see.”

More on Cable: “I just want to know . . . how do you justify firing somebody when you just went 6-0 in the division and 8-8 in the season after we put in so much as a group, as a unit, as a team with our leader being Tom Cable, how do you just go ahead and whack this guy with, I mean, no reason?”

If anybody can say this in the Raiders organization, it’s Lechler. He’s regarded as the NFL’s finest punter, and if Davis wants to part ways with him because of the above comments, Lechler would have no problem finding a job in the NFL. Hell, maybe that’s exactly Lechler’s plan.

Maybe Lechler’s not just pissed, but maybe he’s also quite brilliant.

And as we all know, pissed and brilliant is a dangerous combination.

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

Al Davis is a senile old fart who used to be a genius but since the dementia has set in is clueless. for the benefit of the NFL and the rest of us he should sell the team and find a nice and comfy retirement home where they can deal with his Alzheimers disease. Judging by your spelling, grammer, punctuation, and lack of knowledge of the NFL I would say the only idiot around here is you.

Al "The Crypt Keeper" Davis really makes the NFL offseason interesting.  I've enjoyed so many of his antics.  I swear, I rate him among the other awesome old guys like Hugh Heffner.

On another note, I just find it funny when a punter makes headlines.  Lechler should love Al Davis.  Who else is going to give a punter what is basicly $4 million a year.  I mean, seriously, 4 years for $16 million?  And he gave Janikowski the same.  Thats $8 million a year for a punter and kicker.  Notice Janikowski is staying quiet.

You people have no clue! Al built  this team and always has. cable is no where near a nfl coach! the players al brought in took them to 8-8 not cable he has punched an assit. coach; beat up wpmen; you can't have that going on as an nfl head coach but his final screw up was his phrase of" WERE NOT LOSERS ANYMORE " did him in!!!! the raiders have struggled since the 2002 super bowl season but have more wins and more super bowls then alot of teams in the nfl all under the direction of the football guru BIG AL DAVIS you can all attempt to argue but alot of teams would love to have the amount of victorys and super bowl titles that the raiders have. al has put together a pretty good group right now and with a REAL HEAD COACH will be back in the playoffs next year !!!!!SAME YOUR REPLIES BECAUSE I KNOW MORE THEN ALL OF YOU IDIOTS !!!or replie next january when you can't because i'll be dead on by then !!!!!!

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

Just when I thought my Denver Broncos were the laughing stock of the division, Al Davis saves me the embarrassment. The recent Raider tradition is to take two steps forward and then take two steps backwards... and trip.  Al Davis is Al Davis's biggest problem when is comes to creating a successful football team (or at least one that the fans of Oakland can cheer for)  Again, as a Denver fan I was disgusted by the fact that the Raiders stomped the Broncos like a narc at a biker rally this season, but I was, at the same time, jealous by the fact that the Raider fans had something that I didn't... a team with a promising future.  Well Mr. Davis, thanks for stripping that away from Raider Nation.  I'm truly grateful for Al Davis; as long as he's in control of that franchise there will always be a chance for new lows in the AFC West.

Well, it's not too often a punter makes headlines.  But if he is looking to land with a new team, def a good move on Lechler's part.

I really don't have a problem with this; yes, Cable was in charge when the Raiders posted their best record of the last 8 years, but the team has improved more the less he been hands-on. When he ran the OL, they stunk; now, under a different coach, they have improved. Last year, when calling the plays as OC, the offense was putrid; this year, under a new OC, they set a team record for points. The defense and ST also improved, all under coaches other than Cable, so what is his real value to the team?
Some argue that he is a motivator, and while I can't argue that that is something that he has shown, there were also games this year in which the team was obviously flat, and not ready to play, so even that positive is hit and miss.
Cable is clearly not necessary for the (continued) improvement of the team, and it would seem that Al has a plan of some sort, although we won't be able to determine how good or bad until after he springs it on us. I'd love to think that he can bring in a real HC, but I have a lingering suspicion that either Jackson will be promoted, or someone else hired out of the blue. I'll wait and see who it is before I judge this move...

Excellant article Josh Katzowitz. I agree with Shane Lechler, letting go of Tom Cable was a big mistake for the Raiders. Cable battled to keep his job after spousal abuse was alledged but he was unable to keep his job after sweeping the WEST.? I hope the best for Tom. What's Al going to do now?

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

I'll try to handle my comments with a little care & courtesy! Um, no I won't! Some of you posting telling Lechler to shut the hell up are plain idiots with almost none or no brain cells left. Last I checked Mr. Punter was a payed employee of the Raiders, and a very respected one at that! Last time I checked the roster of the Raiders, I didn't see any retarded He HateMe, or RobOakland or HavDizzle crap on there or their friggin jerseys so maybe you should take some of your own advice and go back to crankin on your myspace accounts! Yes myspace, not too sure you boys are able to handle the intricacies (difficulty) of facebook yet!
