Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

Al Davis' decision not to pick up Tom Cable's option was not seen well by Oakland P S. Lechler (US Presswire). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

On Tuesday, we told you about the, um, interesting decision by owner Al Davis not to renew the option of Raiders coach Tom Cable, casting him into unemployment instead of rewarding him for the team’s best record in eight seasons and a clean sweep of the AFC West.

Now, the fallout begins.

Oakland punter Shane Lechler told CSN Bay Area (via Pro Football Talk) that the decision was a “huge setback” and intimated that it might cause the team’s best players to not want to play for the organization.

“I’m not so sure this isn’t a terrible decision,” Lechler said.

A few other spicy quotes.

On Hue Jackson, the team’s offensive coordinator who now could be in line for Cable’s old job: “Yes, I do respect (Jackson) … Whether he can call plays and pull off the whole head coaching deal and deal with Al Davis on the side, I don’t know.  That’s a lot on somebody’s plate, so we’ll see.”

More on Cable: “I just want to know . . . how do you justify firing somebody when you just went 6-0 in the division and 8-8 in the season after we put in so much as a group, as a unit, as a team with our leader being Tom Cable, how do you just go ahead and whack this guy with, I mean, no reason?”

If anybody can say this in the Raiders organization, it’s Lechler. He’s regarded as the NFL’s finest punter, and if Davis wants to part ways with him because of the above comments, Lechler would have no problem finding a job in the NFL. Hell, maybe that’s exactly Lechler’s plan.

Maybe Lechler’s not just pissed, but maybe he’s also quite brilliant.

And as we all know, pissed and brilliant is a dangerous combination.

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

"Tom ... Cable.... is not... the right fit... for tha Raiduhs, but... JaMarcus Russell... is... a great playah. Now bring me more... goats blood.. and... a sacrificial... virgin."

For the guy ripping on Lechler because he's a mere punter, please tell me--

Is the punter not in the locker room and on the field with all the other players? Does he not go through the same ups and downs that the rest of the team does over the course of a season? And most importantly, is anything Lechler said incorrect? You can make fun or kickers and punters all you want until a Matt Dodge situation comes up or you need a game winning field goal as time expires. Then special teams players aren't just a novelty anymore. And the reaction to Cable's firing has been almost unanimous among fans, so if anything, Lechler's opinion as an actual member of the team validates the outrage Raider fans have been expressing.

Lechler is not happy with Raiders organization

Lechler hit this right on the money. The only thing I do disagree with is, if Hue Jackson takes this job, atleast they will not have to learn another offense of scheme. So, we shouldn't seem much of a difference in there offense. Now, if Harbaugh where to come in, it would most likely stunt the success of younger players like D-Mac, and Ford. Either way, it will affect the outcome of the 2011 season no matter what, let's just hope for the better! Wishful thinking, Raider Nation.

Al Davis couldn't possibly think that this move makes sense enough to lure in the talents of a Bill Cowher does he?!  Jim Harbaugh couldn't possibly pass up the 49ers job for this one could he?!  None of the "premier" coaching talents out there could possibly think that the Raiders job is the best fit for them!  Cable did a great job with what he had and with the emergence of Jacoby Ford, McFadden, Miller...they were a Quarterback away from a possible playoff birth.  This team was playing hard for Cable and now what?  They start over?!

Have you seen any free agent players rushing over to Oakland hoping for a contract the past few years?

Just when the Raiders were on the verge of regaining a glimmer of credability OLD reliable decides to flush it again.

If Al Davis held a team meeting today and said "Anybody who doesn't want to be a part of this team should leave right now", how many do you think would stay?  Maybe he needs to see that his own team has no faith in him or his "vision".  You think this team is going to rally around a Tony Sparano or Eric Mangini?

I thought Tales from the Crypt was taken off the air?  Man, I feel sorry for Raider fans, Cable seemed like a good fit.  Fear not Raider fans, if the picture is a tell tale sign, I don't think you will have to worry about Mr Burns much longer.

sheeat as a Giants fan it goes without saying that a punter is VERY important. after losing perhaps the 2nd best punter in the game you feel the difference!! anyone who makes stupid comments diminishing the value of a punter simply does not understand football. Period.
So Marvin Lewis and Kubiak both with losing records keep their job while Cable, who the players love and play hard for and brought them back to respectability gets fired. I honestly think Al Davis has completely lost his mind, and the picture only validates my point. Know when to say when, Al. I feel bad for the guy, but I do think he'll find work rather quickly and it may end up being a huge positive and open up an opportunity elsewhere, where the owner is not senile.

If whoever took that picture had just zoomed out a little bit, you'd see the Angel of Death descending on Davis.

Stabler, Allen, Gruden, now Cable....the list continues. Al has a knack of getting all the attention with these strange moves.  Stabler worked out but Allen & Gruden came bakc to bit him in the ass. We'll see how Cable's saga plays out.  If it costs him the best punter in the league then it's already not a smart move.  I don't have anything againt Al, he is enshrined in my Alma Mater's (Adelphi U.) sports Hall of Fame, but he has always been the epitome of a colorful, devious and enfuriating owner/GM.  Jerry Jones probably has Al's picture on the nightstand next to his bed.  As with all Al Davis moves over the years, only time will tell if it was the right move....but as's getting all the headlines!
